Author: Bandy Date: Wed 19th Nov 2025. 13:02 Now that we`ve qualified for the World Cup do you think there`ll be many players, perhaps on the fringes of the England squad, who suddenly discover that they have a Scottish granny? People like Harvey Barnes for example (using him as an example because I think he`s eligible for Scotland, but has shown no indication of wanting to play for Scotland). Clearly a level above some players in the squad...but would you drop someone from the squad that qualified to make room for him? Thoughts? Are there any players you`d accept if they discovered a Scottish Granny, and would be eligible to play for us? Reply |

If they haven`t and they show a desire and commitment to play for us for a long time then I have no issue with it, almost every country has at least a player born outside their border. A case by case basis for me, up to the management. Reply |

| 4. Author: BlackLight Date: Wed 19th Nov 2025. 16:10 There is an interesting question. How loyal should SC be to the guys that got us to the World Cup. For me he has to pick the best squad, not the last squad. Also, taking some younger players helps to build experience for future success. There shouldn`t be anyone in the current squad that`s guaranteed a ticket, but I think SC is likely to be too loyal. Reply |

He has one full England cap from 2020 so I’m not sure how that impacts the situation. It’s contentious the granny issue and I’m not entirely sure where I stand on it especially as the likes of Barnes has turned us down once already. However, the thought of Doak on the right and Barnes on the left of one of our strikers really changes the potency and the dynamic of the whole team and would undoubtedly improve our qualification prospects. Author: Stanza Date: Wed 19th Nov 2025. 16:54 I could be wrong, but I think it was Ian McLauchlan (Mighty Mouse) who said, after one of the Scotland Rugby team`s regular defeats: "The last thing you want to be in a losing team is old." And that is my concern about this Scotland squad. Undoubtedly they will run through brick walls for each other and for the manager, but several are already over 30, and against younger players the North American summer heat just may prove a bridge too far (mixing my metaphors). _________________ Support Dunfermline Athletic Disabled Supporters` Club (DADSC) when you shop online with one of 8000 firms: http://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/dadsc[Reply |
| 10. Author: PARrot Date: Wed 19th Nov 2025. 16:54 If you have English and Scottish parents, how do you choose a nation to play for? He might feel equally both, but If he was raised in England with English peers, that could tip the balance. So he has a choice who to play for. What sportsman doesn`t want to play at the highest level and hope to win tournaments? Scotland have been very poor for a long time. I don`t think we can blame him for choosing the better prospect. Judging him is more about our patriotism than his loyalty. His patriotism is understandably divided. I have no problem with the best players available being selected under these circumstances. | 11. Author: wee eck Date: Wed 19th Nov 2025. 17:18 Scott McTominay is an interesting one. He was born and brought up in Lancashire. His father is Scottish and Scott wanted to play for Scotland from a young age. I think he visited his Scottish grandparents a lot in his school holidays which maybe helped. When Alex McLeish was Scotland manager he travelled to Man Utd`s training ground to speak to him whilst Gareth Southgate only contacted him by text apparently. Angus Gunn`s another of the current squad who could have played for England and I think he dallied about committing to Scotland until it was clear he had no chance of an England cap. Being professionals, I`m sure that all that is forgotten when they pull on the shirt and they just want to win. Reply |
| 12. Author: Bandy Date: Wed 19th Nov 2025. 17:37 Harvey Barnes`s only England cap was in a friendly v Wales, so I think he`s still eligible for Scotland should he want to be. Personally, I think he`d be a great addition to the squad - and I`d certainly call him up for pre-tournament friendlies (if he was willing), but I get the argument that the vast majority of the current squad have earned the right to go to the WC. Just to be clear the question is purely hypothetical - I`ve no idea if Barnes wants to play for us or not. Reply |

| 16. Author: WarringtonPar Date: Wed 19th Nov 2025. 19:09 Barnes has Saka, Rashford, Eze, Foden and Bowen in front of him from the last squad. Add Grealish and Gordon to the mix and it’s clear he’s not getting near the England squad. Reply |

| 18. Author: NMCmassive Date: Wed 19th Nov 2025. 23:11 In terms of lifting the overall level of the squad - Havey Barnes would certainly do that. Our midfield is still very competitive however we’re short of GK, CB and strikers. As someone said Barnes would be a good player to have on the left. I don’t think adding him to the squad detracts from the rest of the squad. A small number of additions would be great but wholesale changes would not. I do think it’s o my likely we could add one or two anyway. COYP Reply |
| 19. Author: red-star-par Date: Wed 19th Nov 2025. 23:17 Harvey Barnes had his chance, wasn`t interested. Clarke left the door open for him to get in touch if he was interested. Personally, I`d say we are lucky to have a pool of players who really enjoy being part of the national set up. They are a tight knit, loyal bunch. There is no point jeopardising the togetherness of the squad to bring in people that are only interested now they get a chance on the world stage Reply |

Angus Gunn played for England at every level from u16 to u21, I think he also played for England schoolboys. He turned Clarke down a couple of times before it was clear he wouldn’t feature for England. We welcomed him with open arms. I think if Barnes gave the slightest indication that he’d changed his mind Clarke would have him in an instant. Would that decision have an effect on the existing squad is up for debate. Reply |
