From the grab/elbow on barney to the borderline red card that didn`t even get looked at, not to mention the grappling and two hands on the back that went consistently unpunished it was an incredibly poor performance. You’ve been conditioned over the years by refs giving fouls for absolutely everything, the slightest touch or grab. The ref against St Johnstone was a prime example, he must have blown for a foul every 15 seconds in the second half of that match. Those of us who are old enough remember the days when you could actually challenge for a ball without it being penalized. The ref yesterday did miss things, he did make mistakes….they all do, but he was pretty consistent throughout and imho the best we have had this season. Wait till you see the ref against Partick then you might change your mind about the one yesterday… What an opportunity we missed in 2014. Reply |

Author: parsmad68 Date: Sun 23rd Nov 2025. 15:44 desparado, Sun 23 Nov 13:13 Sorry Desperado when a player goes in with a straight leg and studs up, which I can see from the North West, in line with the linesman who could equally see it and the referee just didn’t look at it. I lost my blob at that one. If conditioning to modern standards is my opinion, then I believe player safety against reckless challenges is paramount and the referee didn’t get any hold of the situation yesterday. Reply |
| 23. Author: par_33 Date: Sun 23rd Nov 2025. 16:06 We’ve all forgotten about the incident where it seemed like the referee picked up a shin pad and handed it to the dug out? Surely it’s within his duty of care to stop the game and return it to said player that’s lost it. Reply |
| 24. Author: Berry Date: Sun 23rd Nov 2025. 16:42 I thought the ref was alright, yes few poor decisions, thought we should’ve had a penalty in the first minute and then the foul on Todd but have to say I preferred his approach of letting the game flow. He was also consistent with it - referees at this level are never perfect but he was one of the better ones and have to give him kudos for not making the game all about him. Reply |

| 26. Author: GG Riva Date: Sun 23rd Nov 2025. 17:04 In the ref`s defence, he`s not an attention seeker, constantly whistling and needlessly spoiling the game. On the other hand, he can`t ignore blatant fouls, especially inside the box, or play the advantage when there is none, just because the team that was fouled manage to retain possession. I believe he missed a penalty and ignored a possible red card. That`s not good refereeing. ![]() Not your average Sunday League player. Reply |
| 27. Author: doctordandruff Date: Sun 23rd Nov 2025. 17:13 It was probably the best ref performance this season. I didn't feel he thought he was the main man, and the game flowed pretty well. He was also inconsistent, missed clear fouls where the intent was to endanger the opponent and just didn`t speak to players that clearly needed talking too. The bar is so low now that being pretty hopeless is about all we can hope for Post Edited (Sun 23 Nov 17:13) Reply |
| 28. Author: wee eck Date: Sun 23rd Nov 2025. 18:40 I see Ross Hardie, who refereed our game against SJ two weeks ago, was in charge of the Rangers v Livi game yesterday and denied Livi a penalty for handball, a decision upheld by VAR which angered David Martindale. The consensus opinion of the media seemed to be Livi were hard done by. Reply |
| 29. Author: PARadise Date: Sun 23rd Nov 2025. 19:11 Thats the best refereeing performance of the season imo. Obviously not that high a bar but prioritised letting the game flow and thats the sign of a good ref i think. I think it was more of a case of our young boys not using that to their advantage at times. Reply |

One was a clear penalty in the first minute. Not naming posters names on this thread but the desperate attempts to post like Socks is embarrassing. Post Edited (Sun 23 Nov 20:02) Reply |

| 35. Author: Par-timer Date: Sun 23rd Nov 2025. 21:21 Yesterday was a typical Colin Steven performance to be fair. He was up with play (so much so that he kindly obstructed a Morton player on one occasion for us in the second half), and let the game flow, not wasting time (as many do) on pointless lectures after minor incidents. However, he clearly has what might charitably be described as an inconsistent view as to what constitutes foul play, and given that his first duty is the safety of the players, letting dangerous challenges go is a real concern. What usually happens in his matches is that the players eventually just ignore him and get on with it playground-style, accepting that holding/pushing etc will go unpunished and knowing that there is no chance of dialogue with him, and the game itself is usually not too bad as a result, despite the seeth from both sets of fans (and, presumably, players). Author: GG Riva Date: Mon 24th Nov 2025. 11:44 Par-timer, Sun 23 Nov 21:21 If he refereed like that in, say Italy or Argentina, the fouling would get progressively worse and probably end in a mass brawl. I know, cos it happened to me in an Inter village knockout tournament. Letting the game flow is an alien concept. 🙄 ![]() Not your average Sunday League player. Reply |
| 37. Author: adj27 Date: Mon 24th Nov 2025. 12:01 This was exactly what I said at half time - I liked that he let play go on so much but felt there was a real chance of players taking advantage and getting completely out of control in the second half. In fairness though this didn’t happen. Andy Reply |
| 38. Author: wee eck Date: Mon 24th Nov 2025. 12:30 Colin Steven must be one of the longest-serving referees on the list but I think it`s fair to say he`s not considered by the SFA to be in the top echelon of officials. He doesn`t seem to get appointed to handle national cup semis or finals. Maybe that`s because he takes a more lenient approach than some. I think he ref`d the 3-3 game against Falkirk last Christmas in which he gave us two penalties but let Falkirk take a very quick free kick on the edge of our box which led to a goal. Reply |

| 40. Author: wee eck Date: Mon 24th Nov 2025. 18:10 Was the free kick taken from the spot where the infringement took place? How often are the team taking the free kick told to wait for the referee`s whistle before kicking the ball? Just another example of the inconsistency in applying the Laws of the Game. Reply |
