Author: GG Riva Date: Wed 2nd Oct 2024. 07:11 I didn`t lose any sleep over Celtic`s absolute humping, but it`s quite sobering when you consider that they are by far the best team in Scotland right now. When I started following the Pars in the 60s, Scottish teams would expect to beat teams from the likes of France and Germany and usually did. The Pars knocked out Bordeaux and Stuttgart, as I recall. We also eliminated Everton and West Brom, of course.it`s true that European clubs have made great strides since then, but Scottish clubs have regressed, making the turnaround even more stark. Celtic might have avoided such a total pasting if Rodgers hadn`t set his team up to be so gung ho. Did he really think his bhoys would be a match for BVB? Deluded if he did. Not your average Sunday League player. Reply

Celtic looked miles ahead of Bratislava at Parkhead and the gap from them to Dortmund looked just as big. I get where da no 1 is coming from - It is called the Champions League after all - but as was pointed out above, a number of teams who were Champions of their country have already suffered severe hammerings. As well as Celtic, Slovan and Dinamo ( two teams who played the Pars in the 60s and went on to lift the trophy) have already been gubbed and they came through the qualifying stages. I also remember Rangers` humiliation when they played as Scottish champions a few years back.... Not your average Sunday League player. Reply

Either include all the champions or call it something else. There should be no place for 2nd 3rd 4th 5th place teams either. Can only presume Celtic thought this was winnable after Rangers won there last year but as was said , they should have set up defensively and hit on the break which they are unaccustomed to doing but I’m not complaining one bit. Hopefully Cellic fans think of this when complaining of an opposition parking thd bus, because they think it`s the fault of other Scottish teams. Reply

It`s perhaps just one game and you can`t extrapolate from there but the signs in the gap between European and English teams is there to see. It is reflected in the gap between the Premiership and Championship teams in Scotland. Other than Rangers and Celtic the other team make up the numbers, or trundle along the bottom of the league table. As a spectator sport its becoming a hard watch in my view as teams focusing not losing, and have limited options to bring in and risk young players. It`s very much a downward trajectory and there seems to be very few ideas coming out of those who are in a position to make change happen. Reply

Sitting 10 men behind the ball isnt pretty but going trying to play open expansive football gets results like Tuesday. At least 3 times in opening 10mins there was gap wider than the clyde in the middle of the Celtic defence. Reply

That said, you just need to look at the squads to see there is a massive gulf in quality. These days Celtic and Rangers can attract players from the Championship, bottom reaches of the EPL at best. It won`t solve all the issues, and the financial gap between the super wealthy clubs and everyone else is only widening but bigger leagues (16 or 18) would be a great start to change in Scottish football. At the top, it would create a slight chance for someone else to finish in the top 2, 8 games out of 38 against the OF makes this almost impossible. Playoffs in all leagues would be more meaningful, much more of an achievement to come 4th in a league of 16/18. It doesn`t necessarily mean many more meaningless games, if the league is tight (which they should be). Even if there are more of these towards the end of the season - an opportunity to get more youngsters on the pitch - helping the national team. The OF having less league fixtures have more time to prepare for European games and can arrange these crappy overseas tours (they can play each other 2 more in the States, Saudi, on the moon - wherever they like). And more importantly than all of that is the fans - the fans that attend the games - the reason it exists. Visiting more grounds, only per season (in the league at least) can surely only encourage attendances? Reply

The league body`s figures show a similar percentage increase in turnover to a new high of £44.3m. A new broadcasting deal with Sky and "other domestic and overseas broadcasting agreements" contributed to revenue. Additionally, net gate receipts of £2.1m went to last season`s Premier Sports Cup semi-finalists Aberdeen, Hearts, Hibernian and Rangers, who won the tournament. Celtic won the Premiership, Dundee United secured promotion by finishing top of the Championship while the League 1 and 2 titles went to Falkirk and Stenhousemuir, respectively. The Challenge Cup was won by Airdrieonians Celtic won the SWPL title for the first time and Rangers won the SWPL Cup. "We’re really proud to announce record turnover and fee payments to our member clubs today as we continue to build on the strong income growth and commercial deals in recent years," said SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster. "Given the challenging market and economic conditions right now, these encouraging results reinforce the huge popularity of Scottish football, as well as the level of interest this generates with our broadcasters and our increasing roster of partners." Celtic men and Rangers women also won the Scottish Cup tournaments, which unlike the other major domestic tournaments are organised by the Scottish FA.
