Topic: We need bigger players.......

Standing at Pittodrie on Sunday, I noticed there was a significant height and weight difference between the teams.....

Surely if you have a few "big guns" in the team at free kicks, there is a chance of pinching a late goal.
Imagine the scenario....one nil down.....last 10 mins......5 or 6 of our big guys in the penalty box......Toby boots the ball into the opposing penalty box......bang.....equalising goal.......worth a try
We lose the first goal and spend the rest of the game tippy tapping around
Trying to equalise.....imagine the effect of a "high press" with a few giants in the penalty box.........games are not about subtle football.

Agree with this, we’re generally not big enough throughout the team and have tended to be bullied at this level, especially in the middle of the park.

The bigger players we do have who are not centre backs are actually quite poor in the air, chalmers doesn’t really compete despite being over 6 foot and McCann mistimes a lot of his jumps and only has any success against small full backs.

Hamilton one of our better players in the air which tells you everything. Sometimes it’s not just about height, Kane very good at standing his ground against bigger centre halves but he’s the only one I can think of who does this.

I’ve been thinking this for a while too. It was pretty apparent against Livingston midweek too.

You can see how many goals we concede from set pieces as well….

I’d love it if we would sign a striker who is good in the air, a proper plan B. Need a goal with 20 mins to go? Get him on and start launching the ball up to him. We had this with Todorov, he scored some important goals for us in the seaside league late on in games. We have never really replaced him either.

But i thought all our goals come from set pieces?

There's a thread elsewhere that states we hardly score any goals from open play.

Not for the first time on .net, I'm confused

The bigger your team is the more likely you are to win headers and as such pick up the second balls and flick ons etc to retain possession higher up the park. Not to mention not being eased out of challenges by bigger more physical players which happens a lot in this league.

It’s not all about goals…

The OP mentions goals and equalise more than once.

Happy to help.

I`ve been watching since the mid 80s and it seems to quite a consistent thing with us. The amount of times I`ve thought to myself that we look very small compared to other teams I simply can`t count.

Josh Falkingham would like a word.
Smashing wee player. Doing a great job at Harrogate Town, too.

I`ll just leave that there. Quote of the decade.

This is true, last years play off final between Ross County and the wee team, Ross County players were visibly much bigger and stronger than the wee team players. Leishman’s successful era from 2nd division to SPL I don’t think we had many players under 6 foot, never got pushed off the ball.

Quote of the decade?

In this league having bigger players helps in most aspects of the game and you think that’s outrageous?

Clutching much? You even came back to post twice!

Look at McCann, his stature has certainly helped him, if he was 5 ft 10 he’d have been released ages ago.
