A certain Yorkshire vet was looking for a pen name and picked his after seeing him playing for Birmingham on the telly.
I don’t know if they ever met or if Jim the keeper got any thanks for that though!

Sad news. He was the first Pars player I ever got an autograph from.

Another of my 60s heroes gone. ☹️ Herriot was a brilliant shot stopper but a bit like Alan Rough on crosses.

My fav story is about the 2nd leg of a Fairs Cup tie in Stuttgart. After 1-0 win at EEP, manager Willie Cunningham was confident of a clean sheet in the return. 15 mins from time, Stuttgart were awarded a pen. Their No 9 immediately punched Herriot in the face. Stretcher on, Jim Thompson donned the keeper`s jersey. Herriot jumped off the stretcher on the halfway line, grabbed his jersey back, and pushed the pen round the post. Pars got their 0-0 draw to go through. Alex Smith finished up with a blood red front after being kicked on the forehead....

Those were the days. 😁

Not your average Sunday League player.

JH took to blackening the skin under his eye sockets to reduce glare reflected from floodlights - copying American sportsmen.

My best pal`s Dad used to take us all over following the Pars - he reckoned that Jim Herriot`s indiscretion in a cup tie v Third Lanark contributed towards the club missing out on the double 1964-65.

He whacked Max Murray off the ball, was sent off and Thirds equalised (if memory serves) from the penalty. This led to two replays and a fixture congestion including the team playing 3 competitive matches in five days - a league game on the Saturday, the second cup replay (at Tynecastle) on the Monday followed by a Fairs Cup tie on the Wednesday.

This mess also scuppered his chance to play for the Scottish League in a game along with Willie Callaghan and John Lunn.

Sadly JL never had another chance to represent his country again at any level, unlike the other two.
