I found this interview of Dr Ian Graham (man apparently behind Liverpool`s use of data analytics)really interesting. It includes discussions of the signing of Salah, Van Dijk and Allison. Gives a real insight into the role analytics has played at Liverpool. Also interesting that while Fenway made an exception to sign Van Dijk when he was 26, they generally won`t sign anyone over 24 years old. This was primarily because players usually improve up to peak around 27 and then plateau. Performance doesn`t really decline very much from there if they can stay fit. If they say fit they can continue into their 30s (although maybe playing fewer minutes as they age and get more injuries). By signing younger players (24 or less) there may be profitable sell on options if another big club comes along (Coutinuo). You don`t have that signing older players. Coutinuo`s sale (and profits from this) helped pay for van Dijk and Allison. Also discusses how younger players 21+ continue to improve as they get more playing experience. Many dotnetters post that they would like us to sign older proven players thinking of what they have done in the past but perhaps discounting that they may be in the twilight of their careers and on a downhill trajectory- For every Craig Brewster, many older players will be past their peak, won`t have much resale value and may be out injured more. The video also discusses the importance Klop placed on character when signing players (as did Sir Alex). He commented that when Van Dijk was at Celtic it was hard for analytics to assess him as it was only rarely (Rangers and being underdogs in Europe) that Celtic faced the kinds of pressures that would be typical of the premier league in England and so they had limited data on on how players respond under such pressure. He noted that mid table clubs in say Germany would provide them with a much better insight into how players performed under pressure. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4-zolozrmc

Sorry Cammy - I missed your post last week. Would be interested to learn what you think of the book when you have read it.

Data analytics definitely has its place in modern sport, but it must always be used in conjunction with human judgement.
