1. Author: GG Riva Date: Tue 3rd Jun 2025. 06:25 I see UEFA are looking to engineer the CL knockout stage by handing home advantage in the 2nd leg to the team that finished higher in the league phase, taking away another element of unpredictability. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-14772985/amp/uefa-champions-league-rule-change-major-impact-english-clubs.html There is a widely held view that the team playing the 1st leg away has a significant advantage, but are there any stats that actually back this up and has the ditching of the away goals rule made any difference? ![]() Not your average Sunday League player. 3. Author: Parsmad Date: Tue 3rd Jun 2025. 12:57 A study analyzing matches from 2007-2017 found that teams hosting the second leg won the tie around 60-70% of the time in the Round of 16 and Quarterfinals. However, this advantage seemed to diminish in the later stages, with only 20% of teams playing the second leg at home advancing to the final. Reply |

5. Author: GG Riva Date: Wed 4th Jun 2025. 14:35 Parsmad, Tue 3 Jun 12:57 Was the study limited to the CL, Parsmad? If it was, that can be explained that the round 16 was seeded, in that group winners were drawn against teams finishing 2nd in another group with the second leg at home. Not valid statistics, therefore, because there is more than one variable involved. The seeded team would usually be stronger and would arguably have gone through anyway. It would be interesting to see if there was a significant difference between the stats of the last 16 and last 8 as it was an all in draw from the quarters onwards. Interesting that the teams drawn at home first in the semi-finals went on to the final 4 times out of 5. I suppose being at home in the return is only advantageous if you don`t get scudded in the 1st leg. 😁 ![]() Not your average Sunday League player. Reply |
