Why oh why do we insist on just punting it high into the corner area of the pitch straight from kickoff? We`ve been doing it for years and we very rarely get any benefit from it 🤬

I`ve seen a number of teams using this "tactic", but have yet to see any benefit from it.

I never said thats why we lost. I was just expressing my frustration as to why we keep shooting ourselves in the foot like this. That said, had we even attempted to retain a bit of possession from KO, we might have avoided the same sequence of events that led to the first goal. How you start these games is really important.

My take on this, given that so many teams do this, is that generally there must be some benefit.

If the team gets forward and puts pressure on the full back, most likely he will put it out for a throw. Result: attacking throw in the opposition half.

Even if it`s over hit and goes out, you can apply pressure to the throw in.

If you look at the setup objectively at kick off, the opposition have 11 players behind the ball, in their own half (with all your players in your own half), so it`s actually quite a difficult position to advance from.

If there is a benefit to it, the likelihood of it paying off must be extremely small.

If we have had the same routine for years it seems strange considering how many different managers we`ve had. Or is it just a standard opening gambit, like in chess, which is universally popular? I must pay more attention in future.

PSG do it to great effect, put it in the corner and press high from the off. Needs the full team to have that ability though, which we seem to have lacked over the years.
