Re goalscoring, Barney wasn`t even at the club when we scored five at Arbroath and he was absent injured when we scored four at Airdrie so you can hardly attribute the lack of goals to his departure. Maybe Rusty S has a point about Caceres. The team seemed to move more smoothly when he played.

It`s totally legitimate in statistics to remove outliers, just not in a small sample or to do it to tell the story you want to. In this case I`d say it`s fair as 23 games is not a particularly small sample and there are clear outliers .

Using a `median goals scored` might be fairer but I expect the result would be the same (as excluding those two outlying big wins and looking at the mean).

If you were to talk about `average goals conceded` or `goal difference` then it would be equally fair to exclude extremes of conceded goals.

I wonder how this goal scoring record compares to Tidser/McPakes time? The personnel seems different but the style similar.

I thought when you removed outliers from a sample you did so at both ends of the sample? Thankfully, outliers won`t be eliminated when the final League positions are resolved so it`s all a bit academic. It just seems to me to be so negative to ignore the two best performances in assessing the season to date.

I think the relevant point is that there are no outliers at the other end of the sample - scoring 0 or 1 is normal.

On that miss, it was also comical that the linesman didn`t think Fowler was offside when the ball hit him on the line. Nothing happened as a result but it`s an incredible decision.

Of course you can. He’s played 12 games in all competitions and is still our second highest goalscorer. Tod is in the top four up front, albeit having played more than double the number of games. Then there’s Chris Kane and MacLeod, who aren’t even regular starters in our starting 11.
As Berkey said, and as the stats show we don’t score enough goals to go on a consistent run of positive results. We’re fifth in total goals scored, with 29 goals from 23 games. We average just 1.09 goals per game at home, while away from home we’re the secondbhighest scorers with 17 goals from 12 games 1.42 per game.

This is Andy Tod`s world and we are lucky to live in it.

One thing I`d add to what I said above about outliers - we haven`t finished a league game having scored 3 goals so the 4 and 5 goal wins somewhat stand alone.

Hopefully today changes that!

I`d love you guys to be in the changing room motivating the players. Would you tell them to forget about the best performances and quote stats at them? Barney may be a miss but the fact is we scored goals without him. Surely you must have a theory as to why that is the case? He only came because Rudden got injured at Perth and Falkirk were happy for us to get him match fit, so any success was always going to be a `windfall`. It`s Sod`s Law that Rudden then picked up another nasty injury.

Ah, the old if you were in the changing room patter wheeled out again, I see, Eck. Some things never change. The stats don’t lie and goals win games. We need more players chipping in with goals.
We needed an unreliable Chris Kane to pull us out of jail against bottom of League One Kelty and couldn’t manage a shot on target against Morton on Tuesday. Surely even you can see we’re not efficient enough at the top end of the park?

Where did I say we were? My point is that we have scored goals without Barney and have to find the way to do that again.

During Barney’s time with us, he missed two league games, the one you mentioned and the 1–0 defeat to Partick.

Since Stewart left, we’ve played five matches (including two cup games). We’ve scored four goals and lost four in those games. Half of those goals were against League One strugglers, and we’ve also suffered two 2–0 defeats to teams currently below us in the table.
