Topic: Promotion for me

We`ve been in the lower leagues for too long already. If it was a straight choice between being cup winners this year, or being promoted, I`d rather we got promoted - so as to get on with fulfilling the club`s aims to become established in the top flight, and be eligible for all these benefits:

1. Greater income for the club.

2. Increased ability to retain our best players.

3. Increased ability to retain our management and other staff.

4. Potential to attract better players, being a top league team with higher wages.

5. Potential for European football.

6. Greater probability of success in League Cup & Scottish Cup.

7. Probability that, even if relegated from Premiership, we should have greater resources, including parachute payment to bounce back up.

The choice is between winning the cup, and promotion - as if they were both gimmies. As neither is even remotely like a gimmie, or even likely, I`ll be cock-a-hoop if we can win either, and if we don`t I`ll still be satisfied with our exceptional season.

That`s not the choice, Bertie. Winning the cup wouldn`t come with promotion nailed on next year. That`s why I`d grab promotion now if it was a certainty.

I`d pick a cup win.

58 years without one. Could be a once in a lifetime chance. How many times have we been promoted from Tier 2 since then? As a club the highest honour we`d ever achieve is a national cup, and I`d love to see it in my lifetime. I speak to fans of other clubs (St Johnstone, Dundee Utd etc), especially in light of our cup run, and they all say their greatest day of supporting their team was winning the Scottish Cup.

Remember, if we did win the cup we`d get at least 2 chances to qualify for European group stage football (so at least 2 European trips), so that would be another benefit.

We might not get another shot at a Scottish Cup for a long time, whereas we`re likely to get plenty more shots at promotion.

Plus, the Championship isn`t all bad, competitive league, mostly Saturday 3pm kick offs, no sectarian singing, cheaper tickets etc.

I’d go for the cup win. We still have a lot of recruiting to do for promotion but if we’re on our game and catch Celtic on one of their off days, we’ve got a chance in a one off game.

(The cup win gets us in Europe quicker than the OP).

It’s the Scottish Cup for me every single time. All I’ve ever wanted is to see my club lift a proper domestic trophy. I’ve watched Saints win a cup three times, seen Killie, Inverness, Ross County and the rest all have their moment.

So aye, Scottish Cup over promotion all day long.

And the way this season’s going, we might even dare to dream about doing both. What a season that would be.
