Obviously not condoning any sort of threats towards a match day official, but to throw blame on literally everyone BUT the officials in the country doesn’t help them. What I am getting at is the SFA going after everyone, except themselves, when refereeing standards this year (and recently) have been shockingly bad. To claim that valid criticism of under performing refs, that they back to the hilt no matter what, is the cause of all of this is very very short sighted. They have already banned a commentator from Hampden for voicing his opinion - who’s next? Reply |

| 8. Author: GG Riva Date: Fri 15th May 2026. 19:15 Thanks for the clarification, Dave. I`m not sure that we can blame the SFA for having such a poor generation of refs. They are on good money nowadays, but they`re no better than their poorly paid predecessors. There have also been suggestions that ex-players would make better refs, but they`re not exactly queueing up to join the ranks. Other than Sean Murdoch, who`s doing very well, I can`t think of any. There have also been suggestions that the SFA should bring in foreign refs for big games, but what would that say to our home grown ones? They would also bring different problems with their interpretation of the Laws of the Game. Not your average Sunday League player. Reply |

If the SFA openly criticise specific officials it only exacerbates the already volatile situation and encourages the numpties to wholly unacceptable behaviour. They won`t ever go down that road. Author: BouncyPar Date: Fri 15th May 2026. 19:22 I wrote this in the match thread earlier, but it`s probably more relevant here, especially in light of the statement - We need much more transparency with refereeing across the board, not just in regards to VAR. Referees should be compelled to publicly explain their reasons for making a contentious decision, either in a post-match interview or a statement released shortly after the match. Using this case as an example, the ref made a call, then was advised to check VAR, then changed his mind. That`s fine, that`s all within his rights and is exactly what VAR was introduced to allow. Where it falls very short of acceptable is the silence as to why these series of decisions were made, what did he originally see, and what did he subsequently see to call a penalty. What particular guidelines was he thinking of when he formed his opinion, and what thought process did he go through? If there was much more transparency then refs would be given more respect, and therefore their decisions would be respected. Equally, if a call was made in the heat of the moment that the ref then realised was incorrect post-match, own it. Admit it, and move on. Every team has had decisions go for them and against them, that`s the nature of the game. Honesty and explanation would go a long way to breaking down the barriers between referees and the rest of the game. This closed-door unapproachable and unaccountable cotton-wooling of referees is creating situations like this, which could easily have been nipped in the bud by either an admission of a mistake or an explanation of why the call was made in accordance with the laws. | 12. Author: red-star-par Date: Fri 15th May 2026. 19:25 To be honest, they shouldn`t even name the ref and linesmen. They should also let them wear masks. Just let them turn up, ref the match to the best of their abilities, and go home, without the worry that someone is going to target them. We don`t need to know who the refs are, as long as the SFA know. I don`t really believe any of them are truly corrupt, but you could imagine, if a ref has got kids at a Glasgow school full of wee Celtic fans, then that may have some kind of influence over his decision, whether consciously or not Reply |

| 15. Author: SusieQ Date: Fri 15th May 2026. 20:43 Can`t get away with them comparing errors at the VAR screen with managers picking the wrong team or a striker missing a chance! VAR is meant to help the officials get decisions right. Instead, much like down south, it`s just added to the errors and as a result brought more anger & frustration than the "human error" factor we had before. The whole point is that there shouldn`t be errors at the screen or after watching multiple angles! Video ref works in rugby league for the most part.
