Now that he has been confirmed as the new head coach of Scotland and met the media today he probably merits a thread of his own.

"I`m very proud to be here," Pocognoli said, flanked by Scottish Football Association (SFA) chiefs Ian Maxwell and Craig Mulholland at his introduction.

"It`s a very strong challenge, with a project to develop the future of Scottish football. There are the metrics, but the human aspect was also very important. I never go to a challenge where I can`t feel the connection.

"Scotland is a passionate country and I think also, regarding the strong foundation that Steve Clarke and his staff laid, that I can use this heritage to put the next accent on the style of play while also developing players for the future.

"That`s why I`m here."

Scottish press will be on his back from the very first bump in the road. At least the SFA have taken a risk and trying something new.

I really hope the nations league games are treated as a reason to try different systems/players etc and the focus isn’t put on the results.
Bertie was put under immediate pressure when he really should have been given two or 3 years to get the squad he had to restart basically from scratch.
I hope this guy gets the time to put his philosophy into action.

I don`t think he`ll get that long. He`ll be expected to improve on SC`s record ie get us to tournaments and qualify for the knock-out stages. His initial contract is only for two years according to Sky.

It’ll be almost impossible not to qualify for the Euros.
He has a long run of nations league games to get his squad sorted.
Stevie’s squad was coming to a natural end regardless if he had stayed.
Both would have needed a huge rebuild.

We have a great chance to reach the euros as a host so it`s time to really build a new team for the future

I`d imagine the lack of homegrown players playing in our premiership each weekend would concern him.

Artificial Intelligence played a big part in selecting the new Head Coach. A few myths were dispelled during the process; one was that experience, especially previous experience of international management, is preferable, another that it is an advantage to select someone of the same nationality as the team. This process meant that none of the 20 or so applicants who had expressed an interest in the job was interviewed. Only those identified by the AI process were and SP was selected from them.

Dundee United squad against Celtic on Saturday had 1 Scot from 20 named players.

I wonder if AI has ever been used to select international squads? With such a small sample to choose from in our case that may prove difficult.

What uncapped players might be in with a shout of getting into his first squad ?

There may be few that have only had a few caps and fallen out of the picture who may get a shout too.

Maybe the likes of….

Luke Graham
Josh Doig
Ryan Porteous
Ryan Gauld
Lennon Miller
Liam Henderson …still only 30.
Robbie Ure
Keiron Bowie
Kevin Nisbet

Goalkeeper looks to be a big problem. At least Gunn will be getting game time now hopefully..

What an opportunity we missed in 2014.

He has to insist on changing league structure and minimise OF influence, only then will we start to breed numerous good players

He’s the head coach of the team not the sfa it’s not his problem about the old firm why on earth would you walk into a different country and the first thing you’d try do was annoy around 80% of your support by calling out the old firm

As seen with hearts as soon as they started looking for other than Scottish players they got close to a league title. Look at us we’re ripping the Scottish players and people think this is the best chance in a while for us to go up when all we’re doing is signing players from different countries so are we as at fault as the old firm?

When at West Brom he played with James Morrison who is now Barney Stewart`s manager there so maybe Barney will be fast-tracked into the first team! He also played with Graeme Dorrans at WB.

A few others to consider

Scott Bain
Steven Welsh
Josh McPake
Calvin Miller
Josh Mulligan
Oli McBurnie is a must now. Only Scottish striker playing in EPL and was impressed by his performance against Man U

There`s a difference between some foreign players and the opposite ie some uk players. The problem is we have stopped developing decent numbers of Scottish players because there is 1. Little chance of getting through the youth set up and 2 if you do almost no chance of getting into a big side, therefore the Scottish pool of players is v small. The fix is simple, go back to 3 leagues and controversially limit overseas players (Not stop), this will take time to work say 5- 10 years.

Barney would need to be starting regularly for West Brom before he can be considered. One of the gripes that people had with Clarke was picking guys that weren’t starters for their own clubs being selected, he currently falls into that category, maybe by March he can have a claim though.

I agree with this comment. Not only in Scotland, home grown players are not getting the chance to break into their respective 1st teams. Limiting the amount of foreign players can only help the progress of young players.
