That is a phenomenal strike rate (although not as good as Jimmy Greaves` in percentage terms) even allowing for the fact that quite a few are penalties and some of these were of the dubious variety. England fans are currently debating his position in the ranks of their international players over the years but I can`t help wondering how he would have fared if he had been playing for Scotland. There`s no doubt he is a very effective striker when given the chance but he has benefited from playing in a team which creates lots of goalscoring opportunities for him. Would we have done much better with him leading the attack? Post Edited (Tue 06 Oct 08:41) Reply |

I think it is easy to look back on yesteryear and think others were better, or he would struggle in other current teams. Particularly a few years ago when he was playing higher up, he would have completely changed the way Scotland played. His record speaks for itself. Reply |

| 7. Author: wee eck Date: Tue 6th Oct 2026. 11:56 It`s interesting to note the goals per appearances ratios for the top England goalscorers since the War - Kane - 89/124 (72%) Rooney - 53/120 (44%) Charlton - 49/106 (46%) Lineker - 48/80 (60%) Greaves - 44/57 (77%) Owen - 40/89 (45%) Shearer - 30/63 (48%) By comparison Scotland`s joint top scorers were Denis Law and Kenny Dalglish with 30 goals each. Denis did it in 56 games (54%) and Kenny did it in 102 games (29%). In percentage terms both were bettered by Lawrie Reilly with 22 goals in 38 games (58%). Reply |
| 8. Author: Berkey Date: Tue 6th Oct 2026. 14:08 As much as I dislike the guy as in the big games all he seems to want to do is win free kicks he’s got a great record and is a top class finisher. Bayern so far ahead of everyone else in that league you would expect him to score a hatful, they also seem to get a penalty a game it feels like. He held spurs together. There’s no one coming through to replace him, that’s a relief as England have been edging closer and closure to actually winning something.
