"10 corner kicks and 4 or 5 throw ins near the box and maybe 3 or 4 played into the box. In contrast, when Stehousemuir had the opportunity it went into the box"

Great analysis, I was wondering how we managed to lose last night. Must have been the success of Stenny lumping all the corners they had into the box.

Obviously the theory is to drag the opposition out of shape when they set up defensively from set pieces and corners. I do agree that you have to mix it up a bit, but we seem to struggle from corners or free kicks played directly into the box. The short corners obviously rely on players running into space or areas of the park to receive the ball.

I do think we should be getting attackers to the front and far post a bit more. Sometimes we are that 1/2 yard too late or as last night when they get to those positions they dont get the ball. Its that split second decision making that lets us down, but no doubt, practice and hard work will improve it. A word for Rory McLeod who has score the vital goal in the last two games. He looks a much improved player. These are games we would have probably lost last season.

Some good points and some good discussion. I am sure data plays a big part, in terms of short corners being less risky to counter attacks, I assume that is because if a short corner goes wrong, the opposition win the ball back in a wider area than a `traditional` corner played into the box?

The goal last night was from the only short corner which was more like a normal corner, the one Jeffrey mentioned were Tod rolled it to Fraser who immediately crossed it in. The ball was cleared by Stenny before being played back out wide to Tod, crossed in again, half cleared to McLeod who finished well. Doubt that counts as the same phase of play. It came from 2 good deliveries into the box in pretty quick succession, forcing a small error from the defence.

I`d argue you can also keep pressure on with traditional corners provided the delivery is good, it should be hard to defend and if it is, will more often than not lead to clearances leading to more corners/attacking throw ins - not counter attacks. Presumably the longer the ball is in the opposition box the more chance there is of a goal, given most goals are scored from a short distance. Similarly if you have more players in the box, that would be a better time to cross it in?

I don`t dislike short corners, but it shouldn`t be the only option. You also can`t say it is more effective for us, given that we don`t play in any traditional corners - there is nothing to compare with.

I have no particular problem with short corners and free kicks, except when the ball doesn`t end up getting played into the box at all. Then they wind me up.

However, the point of the short corner isn`t just that particular moment in the game. It may be that we establish a pattern, which get the other team defending in on way and then change it up to create a chance (like last night)...or it may just be coincidence.

i dont think we have a decent set piece taker and in the current setup/favoured line up we dont have the height and physicality that will trouble many defences even if someone did put a decent ball in.

they could put a few more in that they are currently doing but there could also be a bit more variation or routines with the short ones, at times it looks as if there is no plan with it all apart from just get the ball back in play.

In the aftermath of Tuesday`s match the Courier mentions the impatience of some Pars` fans, specifically in relation to short corners which they say are used by some of the best teams to draw defenders out of position! Our lack of commanding attackers capable of posing a threat at direct corners is also mentioned as a justification for the short corners.
