Topic: Monkey Shoulder Whisky

A couple of pals came over to my place last week and stayed the night as it was my 70th birthday. One brought a bottle of a whisky called Monkey Shoulder, which I had never heard of before. Its name and the appearance of the bottle give a strong impression that it is an American bourbon, but no, it says it`s from Grants. Taste-wise, it most certainly fits into the Scotch malt category, and a quick Google search reveals a very smooth mixture of Glenfiddich, Balvenie, and Kininvie malts. It`s an excellent drink, and without wishing to cast aspersions on the tight-fistedness of my splendid pal, I have discovered that it`s a pretty cheap price, too...

It gets the OzPar thumbs-up!

:)

I’ll second that. All the best. Agree Monkey Shoulder is very drinkable and great value.

Thanks very much, Ipswichpar! Honestly, I don`t want to make this some old-man lecture, but it`s incredible how quickly time passes the older you get. If you are 40, 50, or 60 today, for goodness sake, please take stock of where you are and make some long-term plans. I am not bullshitting when I say before you know it, ten years will have flown behind you. Remember that Pink Floyd lyric from Dark Side of the Moon? It really is so, so true!

Monkey shoulder is alright. I’ve seen a couple of them empty in my time 😂 I wouldn’t go out my way to get it but one we thing we are blessed with here is easy access to very good whisky. 12yr Old Pultney last time I seen was £25 in Asda. Tamnavulin goes for about the same. I know not everyone drinks whisky but it’s like buying wine in Europe. Just great bottles for not a lot of money for them. Just whisky obviously costs a little more per bottle. Last time I was in Slovakia it was a good £5-10 (converted from €) a bottle cheaper here.

My understanding of Monkey Shoulder is that is was developed as a whisky to be specifically used with a mixer of some sort

Even cheaper - order from Amazon and avoid Scottish minimum unit pricing if it comes from
England. Bottle of Tamnavulin last week for a shade under £22

Surely if it`s order to an address in Scotland MUP applies?

You can get it in Asda halbeath for the same price - they rotate what whisky is on sale and ardour/tamlavulin and a few other nice ones are normally picked up when they’re that price

Would post a link if I could remember how (always such a hassle on this site) but it’s a long standing loophole so will post the google AI response;

“Amazon has been accused of using an online loophole to avoid minimum unit pricing (MUP) laws for alcohol by sending alcohol outside of Scotland:
Details
How it works
Amazon sends alcohol from outside Scotland, where MUP doesn`t apply, to customers in Scotland
What`s been said
Some say that the practice is nothing new and won`t have a major impact. Others say that it`s a market segment that requires careful monitoring.”

Cheers, P. Sort of funny when you think about it. Bottle of whisky leaves Scotland for England to come back to Scotland!

A few years ago I bought a Diageo brand sprits on a Caribbean cruise and brought it back - a distance of several thousand miles.

When we got home an acquaintance at Cambus bond, about 3 miles away, told me it was stored there before bottling for worldwide distribution, so its overall roundtrip journey was actually twice what I had realised.

Amazon does sell all its alcohol at the same price in the UK and a lot of it is under the MUP. The ironic thing here is that selling Tamnavulin at £22, while a good deal, is not under the MUP and you could get the same whisky for that price in any store in Scotland if they choose to sell it at that price. MUP for a bottle of 40% whisky would be £18.20.

They do sell litres of blended whisky such as Grouse for £18.50 which is significantly cheaper than the MUP which would be £26 in a Scottish store.

Yep, as said, keep an eye out when in Asda as they often have it for £22, along with a few other good ones - they seem to rotate what one(s) they discount

Bought a bottle of Glenfiddich 15yr old on Amazon for £41 and it was one of the best whisky`s I have ever had.

Buy all my booze on Amazon now for availability and price. Normally a Buffalo Trace bourbon drinker myself and my wife enjoys the Vodka or Tequila in her Margarita`s and can`t be beaten on price.

I’ve got a bottle of that stored for a nice occasion. It’s a cracking bottle of whisky
