Have we turned soft or is cancelling the fireworks a sensible approach?

These amber weather warnings do often seem to be a fuss about nothing down here.

Fireworks are annoying. They are for kids so have a sensible cut off time for them. Absolutely no need for bangers at 3am.

The experts have to verge on the side of caution .. they are damned if they do or don`t
As for fireworks they surely have to be banned soon a complete waste of money .. potential accidents .. pets scared .. etc.

Better being safe.
There’s hundreds of people behind the scenes (including the live acts and extra structures etc) at these outdoor events so everything is taken into consideration.

I remember a cancellation of the Edinburgh Hogmanay street party when windows blew in on Princes St, and it was before the big wheel and the star flyer were there.

Just reading some of the replies it’s obvious (irrelevant if the wind is too much for fireworks tonight or not)

We’ve gone soft

To be fair to Edinburgh, the weather up here the last 2 days has been woeful. No chance they could safely set it up or host it. I mind a while back during winds a chimney fell off a building in the West End of the street party. Luckily was just outside the cordons so suppose you need to take that into account.

The wind was too strong during the setup phase.

We`d not dream of sending scaffolders or roofers out in that weather, nor would we have 30 years ago, so why would it be reasonable to send folk out to work in dangerous conditions because of fireworks?

That’s an absolute tragedy for them btw. I hope the best for them.

We should probably ban transportation - just in case

Did any of you see the New Year display from China using drones? It was a colourful three-dimensional dragon flying freely in the sky over a large city—which might have been Shanghai, I am not sure - but it certainly points to a future without fireworks.

I couldn`t find a link to the particular display shown on TV down here, but this YouTube link gives you a flavour of the technology`s capabilities. It is just amazing!

Got to say, Disneyland Paris’ Electrical Sky Parade (drone show) last Jan was better than their firework display. Certainly gets you thinking if that would be a better alternative.
