Topic: When I’m cleanin windows …..

I’m moving next month and my letting agents want the standard deep clean of my current abode including the outside of the windows.

However, this is where a dilemma lies. I’ve got sash and case windows. They’re not hinged, but open with the wee rope. I can’t work out how to clean the bottom window pane.

And I’m twa floors up which makes it even harder.

Any advice chaps / chapettes?

We`ve got sash windows downstairs so design might be different, but....

The top bit moves up and down but the bottom bit tips into the house (the top bit of the bottom pane, if you know what I mean).

But that would still make the top bit a bit of a risky challenge. Good luck!

Careful with your google search for window cleaners btw.
I’m 23 minutes in to a bawdy 70s soft porn movie about a window cleaner .
Plots a little thin

Buffy, you should have Simplex fittings (or an equivalent easy clean system) on your sash and case windows. I believe they’re compulsory in Scotland at level 1 and above. They’re designed so you can drop the bottom sash onto a pair of hinges and swing the window inside like a door to clean the outside. The rope on the opposite side of the hinges will be fitted with a sash plug, just open the window until it’s ajar enough to let you pull it out and let the cord clutch catch the rope.

If your current “abode” doesn’t have them, it might be worth mentioning it to the letting agent. There are circumstances where they can get away without using them however other window cleaning arrangements are to be agreed.

Word of warning though!!! If you do look and there are 2 hinges on the side and 2 screws that line up with the hinges in the sash, make sure the hinges are screwed in tight to the wood of the window. If not, the hinges WILL need to be screwed tight BEFORE you attempt to put the weight of the sash on the hinges. It’s actually worth being careful even if the hinges are screwed tight.

If anyone asks the window cleaning only applies to the bottom sash. Absolutely no Top sashes in Scotland require cleaning according to the Scottish government
