Jacob Fearnley from Edinburgh is just about to play Englishmam Cam Norrie. Should be a cracker. TNT 4

At the start of 2024 Jacob was ranked outside the top 600, now he`s just inside the top 50 and British no 2.

Yeah,I just looked into that. His dad is from Glasgow and his mother is from Cardiff, so why does he represent England? Baffling lol. He was also born in New Zealand.

Mind blown.

As per the match, Jacob hasn`t got going yet. He honestly can play much better than he is now. I hope he can turn it around. No bias whatsoever but I genuinely believe he can make the top 20 at least, he`s only been on the main tour for just over a year. He`s 22 but a late starter on the main tour as he decided to go down the college route.

Don`t know what`s up with Jacob but he`s really off his game. He`s piling up the double faults which is something he`s not known for and just looks flat. Maybe it`s the heat but he`s used to heat. They`re both friends so maybe that`s got something to do with it.

It`s not the match I was expecting.

Yes, I`m aware I`m pretty much talking to myself πŸ˜†

Epic final yesterday. Sinner will be kicking himself but Alcaraz never gave in.

Tennis players must be the fittest sportspeople around. To play for 5 hours 29 minutes, with constant changes of pace and direction and a pretty rigorous restriction on the amount of time allowed between points and games, must require incredible stamina and agility. There`s also constant mental pressure to deal with too.

That was one of the best matches of all time. Tremendous skill, speed and sportsmanship over 5 sets and what a comeback.

Bang on again wee eck (ive read a lot of sensible comments from you). Tennis players are far and away the fittest and most mobile athletes going.

Footballers train a few hours a day and play for 90 minutes once or twice a week and they don`t all run about every minute. Tennis players are on their own, run about non stop for between 2 hours and 5 hours. If they manage to win their match they generally play the next day and the next until they lose. Grand Slams and the 9 Masters titles they usually get 1 day off. So to win a Slam you have to play 7 5set matches in 14 days. Masters are only best of 3 but feature all the top players so you see a lot of matches going over 3 hours long.

I watch as much (if not more) Tennis as I watch football, and the respect I have for tennis players is above reproach. It annoys me when Footballers whine about playing 2 or 3 matches a week.

As for the final, it was brilliant. I thought Sinner would win for sure and almost turned it off when he 2 sets and a break up. Glad I persevered. I love watching Carloz as he`s got so much variety to his game and plays to entertain. Sinner bores me silly.

I think that Sinner is bad for the sport. My reason (I really watch a lot of tennis) is that he`s almost invincible. The only player capable of beating him is Carloz, whereas Carloz is capable of losing to any top 100 player because he can be prone to a lack of focus at times. It`s not healthy to have one player so utterly dominant. It`s been around 2 years since he last suffered a shock result, since then he just steamrolls over pretty much everybody. He barely loses a set ffs, and that kind of 1 man dominance just bores me. I also don`t like his style. He hardly ever comes away from the baseline except against the best players. It`s like how I got bored of golf during Tiger`s peak.

At least in tennis, Sinner doesn`t play every tournament so when he doesn`t It`s more unpredictable, making it more enjoyable. I`m sure others feel differently.

For me, Carloz is the better all round player but that lack of focus is dragging him down. The rest of the current players are far to inconsistent to win a Slam. There is Novak but he`s 38 and you can see that father time has finally started to catch up to him. The overall standard of players this era is very poor compared to what I`ve been blessed with the past 10 -20 years, with the 3 greatest players ever, an unlucky Andy Murray who would win 2 - 3 times what he won if he was born ten years later, and a wealth of other top class players (Big Stan, Del Potro etc).

Players like Fritz, De Manure, Shelton etc etc etc wouldn`t have been near the top 20 in that era.

One last thing. You think football forums are bad when it comes to abuse and disrespect? Football forums are tame compared to tennis ones. Some of the stuff I read on them would merit a black card on here. Totally disgraceful πŸ˜† .

Does anyone have any stats for the distances covered in the match?
In an average men`s tennis match they cover 3-4 miles( the equivalent of a round of golf)with plenty of stoppages but footballers typically cover double that in 90 minutes. Obviously the match at the weekend couldn`t be classed as `normal` so I`d be interested to find out the numbers.
Not trying to take anything away from the tennis players who are clearly great athletes. It`s more the concentration over a 4 or 5 hour period that impresses me.

Good post, but I’d still take this compared to the players currently competing on the WTA
Ons Jabeur is the most gifted player but can’t cope with the power of the baseline sluggers.

Alcaraz has 5 grand slams and has just turned 22, so his lack of focus isn`t dragging him down too much.

The likes of De Minaur and Shelton would take out many of the top 20 players back in Murray`s era.
