| 3. Author: McCaig`s Tower Date: Sun 1st Feb 2026. 21:38 This is terribly sad. I knew he had had one or two health issues recently but had thought he was recovering. It must be particularly distressing that he seemed to have survived the particular procedure. I met him a couple of times (and partnered him at golf once). I remember watching some war anniversary thing on TV (I think it may have been the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Jutland). There was a service at St Magnus Cathedral and I recognised the piper - he had been a few years above me at primary school - but as the camera panned the congregation I thought I spotted Lord Jim. I don`t think David Dimbleby commented so I tweeted "was that Jim Wallace?" and he later tweeted me back saying "yes!" For an unassuming bloke in the choir he had quite a career - in government at Holyrood and at Westminster - member of 3 different legislatures - and Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland - only the second lay-person in nearly 500 years to have held that position. A sad loss - and not that old. Reply |
