Nethy Bridge evacuated, smoke reaching the North Sea and Police declaring a Major Incident. These things will become more of the norm with hotter and longer drier spells in the summer. I guess it takes time to get to the bottom of it. Worryingly it is showing how far behind we are for dealing with these the more they happen. Reply |
| 5. Author: ipswichpar Date: Sat 25th Jul 2026. 17:43 I think I heard on Scotcast recently Dave that around 90% are human caused. A lot of the land management is questionable too.... more focussed on money from shooting that managing the land as it best could be. Reply |

Author: LochgellyAlbert Date: Sat 25th Jul 2026. 18:08 News on radio going full tilt on the fires in France & Spain, ain`t nothing new as way back in 1994 we were sitting on a beach on the Costa Brava with soot falling on us from forest fires. The ferocity and spread may have changed, but it`s true that most are started by humans. Only hope that all that are involved in fighting them come home safely!🚒🙏 Reply |

Not denying the stats btw - today at Burntisland shows I stated to the mrs that the grass was a tinderbox, where literally seconds later a ride operator and a member of the public both lit up fags in the middle of the grassy field……it beggars belief. Author: LochgellyAlbert Date: Sun 26th Jul 2026. 14:15 Raymie the Legend, Sat 25 Jul 21:09 OK guys, let peace break out!👍 Spent many a fine day on Mossmoran fighting fires that popped up anywhere due to the peat that was very prevalent there, a hot and exhausting exercise. One such event lasted days, fortunately I had taken the day off to go to the Scotland v England match! Lucky escape 🤔🏴 When i was at Training School, Gullane 1973, there was a bad one up at Blairadam or Devilla, when wind direction changed and managed to scortch one of the fire engines. It was classed as a "crown fire" ie when the fire jumps across the tops of trees, and roads.😱 Reply |

He was basically complaining that since the whole re-wilding thing started they’ve not been allowed to manage the land. He was saying there are a lot less fire breaks and there are no more controlled winter burns that were used to prevent summer fires. Is this another win for the net zero/eco warriors? COYP Reply |

Should have kept the school as it was, now Cambuslang is main training base, in Strathclyde region as everything became after integration to Scottish Fire Service!😡 Reply |

How exactly does heather and gorse catch fire "naturally"? When I was in my early 20s, I was convinced fires could be started by a carelessly discarded cigarette end and said so among some mates. One of them offered me £10 (a fair sum then) if I could start a fire with a burning cig.It was hot and dry. He gave me a cig and a lighter. I gathered some dry grass, lit the cig and placed the grass gently around it. I then blew gently on the burning cig until it was completely consumed. The dry grass charred and blackened but stubbornly refused to produce a flame. Since that day, I`ve had a real problem in believing any of these wildfires are not deliberate acts of arson. Please tell me I`m mistaken. ETA. A quick Google lists volcanoes and lightning as natural fire starters but perhaps we can say these are pretty rare in Scotland. 🤔  Not your average Sunday League player.
