It’s been a very sad case in the news these past few weeks. The man in question has just been sentenced to 20 years for his 67 offences over a 12 year period.

If you don’t know / haven’t been following it I’d advise you not to read about any of the offences.

The families of the deceased have been dignified in every way and I cannot imagine how they’ve managed to do that. My thoughts have been with them all since this news came about.

One of a few stories in the news today where the sentence seems completely insufficient.

Hull is one of the poorest places in the UK , and I suspect these will be some of the poorest people in that city.

They will face trauma about this for the rest of their lives. The judge pointed out that the offender had been responsible for more than 2000 burials over his career so every single one of them will now have unanswerable questions.

A tragic case.

I read some of the details when this case come to light, it was one of those instances where I felt I knew all I wanted to know and just wait for the outcome.

Horrific stuff, beyond comprehension, I don`t see why as a society we should be forced to share streets with these people, even if it is 10/20 years away.

May be I misread - but there was an article online which said that the funeral business was unregulated - surely not ?

Largely so in England, Wales and N.I. according to Google - with Scotland only taking action last year - the rest of the UK to follow as the government urgently planning steps to rectify in light of recent revelations.

Astonishing really.

Yes VEE apparently anyone can set themselves up as a funeral director. That’s why there’s been outcries before now from distressed families.

Remember the story recently about the woman who had been disrespectful towards stillborn and SIDs infants at her home when she was using it as a funeral business. Customers were shocked that she wasn’t doing what she claimed she would do for them.

While not regulated,.there are meant to be checks carried out and regular documentation submitted following burials.

In this case, the checks didn`t happen, and nobody flagged that the paperwork wasn`t submitted.

This only came to light when a whistle-blower flagged something while this monster was off on a long haul foreign holiday. I dread to think how many others would have been impacted.

I get the families` demands for regulation but I hope the authorities don`t get a free pass here as they didn`t do their jobs. And given the time legislation can take in this country that they manage to get some emergency stuff in, even if it isn`t perfect first time around.
