There`s dozens of shafts recorded from various old pits, but there`s dozens more not on any record. You`d be a mug to buy there without doing your own due diligence, and any estate agents selling these houses without fully explaining the history and potential effects of underground movement should be treated criminally. My father in law told me they used to sit and have their piece on the ground that overlooks the A92, then go back underground to continue working! Reply |
| 4. Author: BouncyPar Date: Fri 4th Sep 2026. 11:40 West Fife is proud of our old mining heritage, and rightly so. Unfortunately, we don`t seem to have been so great at accurate record keeping. Many shafts and roads were either undocumented, or the records have been lost over time. That`s understandable, but I can`t for the life of me get my head round why permission would ever be granted to build anything larger than a garden shed within say 500yds of a known mine work. Equally, many of these old shafts have a build up of natural gas within them. It`s a disaster waiting to happen, and both the local planning authority, and the developers, are playing a dangerous game Reply |

Author: buffy Date: Fri 4th Sep 2026. 13:10 Coal mining reports are part of conveyancing standards when purchasing homes and land so I think there’s probably an internal investigation ongoing into why these were not carried out properly (or at all) with all companies involved. I’d hope so anyway. There were coal mining movements in a residential area in Edinburgh a few years ago so this is not a rare occurrence. ”Buffy’s Buns are the finest in Fife”, J. | 6. Author: jake89 Date: Fri 4th Sep 2026. 13:21 Wellwood is highly questionable land and I`d be hesitant to buy there. The Whitefield land towards Kingseat should be fine but I`d worried if I was buying one near Waxwing. The old mineral railway used to run across part of it. Reply |

There is a new village/Town being built as we speak just outside Longniddry on an old opencast sight called blindwells .. 4,000 flats and 23,000 houses plus school .. shops etc .. disaster wating to happen We are forever shaped by the Children we once were Reply |

Is it safe to buy a house over old coal mines? Usually, yes — most coalfield homes are structurally sound. Safety depends on the depth and type of workings, which the CON29M coal search reveals. | 11. Author: jake89 Date: Sat 5th Sep 2026. 15:18 Misread, sorry. The Blindwells website suggests 1,600 but 2,300 wouldn`t surprise me. Still wouldn`t touch it even though I`m sure it`s fine. East Lothian seems more affected by uncontrolled housing developments than Dunfermline. 1,600 people and the nearest big supermarket (not counting Aldi/Lidl) is Musselburgh or Dunbar. The bypass is bad enough as it is. The schools in Prestonpans are already overflowing so I assume they`re building a new high school? Reply |

They seem to think lots of childless couples with one car are buying 4 bed houses 😂 Preston Lodge is already a big school and also a building that must be getting pretty tired now. They`ll need a new school or to squeeze kids in at Wallyford. Reply |
