Ooft.

Is the precedent for the presidential withdrawal LBJ in 1968?

This reminds me of a story that resurfaced the other day with the assassination attempt on Trump. Obviously I don’t want to make light of a tragedy, but one of the things that put pressure on LBJ to withdraw was the strong showing by challengers to the incumbent for the Democratic nomination, including Eugene McCarthy and Bobby Kennedy.

RFK won the Californian primary but was shot dead in Los Angeles. Earlier that day in that very city, Manchester City had played the Pars in the latest in a series of exhibition games on their North American tours. The Man City manager Joe Mercer had phoned home to advise his chairman that Bobby Kennedy had been shot. Unfortunately, the chairman assumed he was talking about their reserve left back of the same name (ex-Kilmarnock). It could have been funny if it wasn’t so tragic.

It is a relief to see an end to this unfortunate episode. Biden was a lost cause. I hope that the Democrats will pick a candidate capable of beating Trump. Kamala Harris does not look likely to fit that bill.

Outside of Pete Buttigieg, I know little about the leading Democratic candidates. I would think Trump would be seriously worried about Mayor Pete; by most accounts, he has performed competently as transport secretary and has a pleasing manner. His sharp intellect and debating skills would certainly test Trump. No doubt his homosexuality would not fare well with a lot of Trump`s supporters, but it would be a good test of just how liberal and democratic American society is... or is not.

It could be interesting if it is Harris.

Last time round, when Trump was the defending president, he said something along the lines of the vice president can just decide to not accept the results and choose the winner himself.

Does that mean Harris, as vice president, will be able to declare herself the winner regardless of how many votes each gets?

Isn`t that just one of those things that exists but would never be done? But like how the King can overrule government but if he did he`d find himself in a republic shortly afterwards.

I`m not suggesting it would or should this time around but it was what Trump wanted Pence to do when he lost four years ago. Just drawing parallels and wondering how the Trumpees would react.

I think Biden will be a bit upset when he finds out that he has withdrawn from the race.

Hannibal Lecter might be offended when he finds out he was endorsed by Trump (at least I think it was an endorsement - who knows?).

Perhaps he’ll pardon his son in his way out….
Now that would be worth watching the fall out by the MAGA cult.
