The performance of Independents in the Scottish Parliament is patchy - Denis Canavan may be the best example of someone with a long track record and large personal vote who was successful. I think the key factor will be how many of Fergus`s supporters will quit the SNP to campaign for him. If enough do, and he can establish himself as a contender, he could take the seat - he is independent enough (and right-wing enough) to get a lot of anti-SNP votes. particularly since Edward Mountain will not be standing against him this time. I think a lot of elections become two horse races, even if it can take the electorate a couple of elections to work out who the 2 horses are. Reply |
