What a farce this is! Keir Starmer is on his way to COP30 so his deputy, David Lammy, was answering for the government. As is the custom Kemi Badenoch did not appear for the Opposition as the PM was absent and she was replaced by the Defence Secretary, James Cartlidge. The Opposition are allowed 6 questions but Cartlidge kept repeating a question about whether a second asylum seeker had been released in error and Lammy avoided giving an answer. The Speaker ruled that Cartlidge had had his allotted 6 questions and moved on.

At the end Cartlidge raised a point of order saying that the Daily Telegraph is reporting a second asylum had been released in error and asking if Lammy knew this when he asked the question. Apparently it happened last week but was only reported to the police yesterday!

ETA- It`s now been confirmed a prisoner was released in error. He is Algerian apparently but not an asylum seeker.

Being reported that Lammy was informed overnight about it.

Didn`t even have the balls to answer a straight question....just banging on about the last lot being crap as normal.

I`m surprised he didn`t take advantage of the fact that the prisoner wasn`t an asylum seeker and deny that any such prisoners had been released in error!

Se the poppy facists are out in force!

Why not just stick to his avoidance of answering a question, and hiding things from Parliament than diluting that point by worrying about what is or isnt on his lapel?

Our representatives are an absolute shower. The country is in a state and rather than sort it out, our MPs continue to snipe for either side of the parliament. It`s no different in Scotland where progress is stalled because parties just throw insults at each other hoping their little soundbite will make it into the media. Don`t worry, more children are growing up in poverty, the NHS is crumbling, social care is fucked and the economy is sinking, but you carry on trading insults you absolute weapons.

It can be entertaining when everyone is fielding their second team for PMQs.

I find it difficult to take David Lammy seriously after seeing him on Celebrity Mastermind.

Today he seemed very aggressive and claimed to have been expecting to face Robert Jenrick, but he is away to Brazil as well.

The poppy gaffe was unimportant, but should have been avoided, as it distracts from serious issues - but did he forget because he was worried about the latest prisoner release?

Did Cartlidge miscount? On the assumption that you often only ask a gotcha question if you already know the answer, it seemed that he was teeing up his last question to exclusively reveal that another foreign prisoner had been accidentally released (which presumably the Labour front bench were well aware of, (Bridget Phillipson was looking very glum)) but he`d already asked his 6 questions. The Speaker called the next question and there was some confusion with some expecting Cartlidge to get another go.

One every working day.... about 260 per annum. Perhaps it works better on bank holidays and the weekend when there are fewer officers on duty?

I think the speaker should be completely independent and have the authority to get the minister back on their feet to actually answer a question.

The whole weekly event is just a f-ing pantomime which treats the electorate with contempt.

Wait til you find out what happens when a prisoner is transferred / early released and neither the Crown or Defence team are told about it. Cue frantic phone calls to other prisons - they’re not obliged to answer queries in this regard btw. Prisoners may have been instructing solicitors to do more work on their behalf / Crown reopening cases on behalf of the victims and families.

27 prisoners have been mistakenly released from Scottish prisons in the last 4 years.
