Burnham proposing taxing 10% of your estate when you die. Not a terrible idea but seems like another one where the wealthy will transfer their ownership into a trust or another family member to avoid it while those at the lower end of the income scale will take the hit.

Why are we waiting for a person to die before taxing them to pay for social care? Why aren`t we looking at the money made from the taxpayer by private care providers? We know care workers are underpaid and overworked so what are we doing to help?

Personally if it was up to me, ALL money and assets should be taken by the state and then used to help pay for the NHS. Inheritance should just be scrapped, everyone should have to make their own way in the world

Again, the rich would find loopholes to hide their assets.

You could also argue it disincentivises those in the middle to work hard and save money. This is the issue we see right now where many on lower wages perceive those on benefits to be better off than they are. Why work if you can get a free house, benefits, free nursing care etc etc whereas if you work you pay taxes your whole life just to have your house, car and money taken away.

Despite all the focus on those at the lower end not having the will to work, and prefer to stay on benefits.... I`m not sure we have enough jobs for them to fill, short of deporting some non UK nationals who are already working here as part of that programme.

The super rich have all their money offshore, hidden from HMRC, you`ve just got to look at the tax return Sunak submitted.

Paying tax at 21p in the Pound, aye right!😡

We have plenty of jobs in the care sector to the point we`re having to import people as locals won`t do the jobs as they are really hard going.

I don`t believe the number of "unfilled roles`.

Plenty of employers happy to say they have open roles to look good while taking the benefit of working existing staff harder and keeping the additional profit.

In the public and third sector there are currently 701 vacancies in Scotland and that`s with a QUARTER of the workforce from abroad.

We`re having to hire people from abroad as it`s difficult to hire and retain care workers because the hours are long and the pay is crap.

The SSSC last year reported that almost half of all care agencies are carrying vacancies. Almost a third of councils have vacancies in half their care services.

This is only going to get worse as there`s an aging social care workforce AND a growing aging population.

Not to go off piste, but Farage told us British workers would take on all these jobs đŸ€”

To be fair to him, they probably would under a Reform government as all benefits would stop and they wouldn`t bother if inflation went up.

I suggest you think about that statement.
If we all have to make our own way in the world what’s the incentive to work and create wealth if the state takes everything from you in the end?
Similarly unless people work, invest and make money the state has nothing to support those that don’t work.
We pay taxes on our income, our savings and you want a death tax even more punitive than we have now?
The pips were squeezed in the 70’s until we had to go for an IMF bail out when the money ran dry as the wealth creators left the country which was in hock to the unions.
It’s time we lived within our means and cut government spending and all the freebies that are handed out.

Jimmy that’s a good post. It’s too easy to forget that heavy socialism/communism sounds like a good idea until realising that once the working class and middle class learn that no matter how hard they work they’ll never earn more than the next person - they’ll stop working.

Literally gets to the point that you’ve to introduce laws against unemployment.

Thats where the old joke of “they pretend to pay us so we pretend to work” comes from.

I wouldn’t work for any state, I work for myself and my family.

If I’d be expected to hand it all over and then beg for my share back, then they can GTF

I’m happy to pay a a reasonable share to support genuine fellow citizens who are in need to get by, and for other things like education and nhs (however i would limit what the nhs does for free)

Outside that, I think the state needs to keep its nose out of my business, eg who I give my earned/taxed money to and any assets I bought with that taxed money

The government would have some challenge noting down everyone`s personal plans for who could and could not get any of their tax money!

No system will be perfect but it`s important to recognise and rectify flaws.

A lot of people are dependent on inheritance to pay off their own built up debt, because the only way to make it in the world for low earners is to build up debt.

It’s the way the world is these days.

But its ok, keep letting the billionaires and millionaires dodge their unearned taxes and hide their money away in trusts for years.

"illegals" cost around ÂŁ4bn. Pensioners cost ÂŁ146bn. Working age benefits are ÂŁ145bn. Disability benefits are ÂŁ77bn.

The total welfare bill for the UK is 100x that of "illegals".

I`m not saying nothing needs done to properly control immigration and process illegal immigrants, but they`re a small problem. The single biggest issue in the UK is an aging population and a massive social care bill.

My brother in law rents his house, has no car, no savings and a load of debt. If there was to be no inheritance he would end up bankrupt, which would then cost us more as banks would whack up charges and interest rates to cover those defaulting.

It’s actually crazy the amount of personal debt. As long as I’ve been an adult dealing with money, it’s been actively encouraged to accumulate debt. Mortgages, cars, credit cards, phones etc etc. I really wonder how many folk in their 50’s live in a nice area and drive a nice car but have a truck load of debt to go with it.

And the older generation from that (the pensioners) are the ones who blame our generation for their debts, forgetting they had it easier financially than us.

My mum managed to single parent 2 kids through the 90s and 00s and pay off a mortgage and provide us with a great up bringing all on one income. Thats impossible now without running up personal debts. Unless you’ve received inheritance money.

The banks also learnt nothing from the 08 crash and have always continued to allow people more and more credit as long as minimum payments are made. It will crash again soon.
