Author: wee eck Date: Wed 30th Sep 2026. 15:18 It`s remarkable how many of the new policies announced in the run-up to, and during, the Labour Party Conference don`t change much in Scotland because they relate to devolved policy areas. An extension of free bus travel, taking some of the rail network back into public ownership and giving regions the opportunity to impose tourist taxes were all floated in advance of the conference and yesterday`s speech by Burnham just added to them. There will be more public control of water boards and a national home care service will be introduced similar to the Scottish one. In fact all these new policies are already applicable in some form up here, courtesy of the Scottish government. But the coup de grace came with the announcement that the UK`s relationship with the EU would be re-negotiated, possibly resulting in a return to full membership. So our big next-door neighbour has finally come round to our way of thinking on that too! What price they`ll be offering English voters independence soon? Reply |

Or have they basically committed to having a review of lots of stuff, and might do something different in 5 or 10 years? I suspect the party will turn against him, or they will spend the time just having a chat and doing nothing. Reply |

| 5. Author: Indiapar1 Date: Wed 30th Sep 2026. 16:55 I think alot of the Labour policies are aspirational. Time will tell if they can actually deliver. On the EU, the French and Spanish PM's have said they would both welcome back the UK. The spanish said "with open arms". They stated hpwver that Britain would not get the terms they had before such as an annual rebate; they would have be part of Schengen passport free area, and join the Euro....
