143. Author: weemike Date: Sat 5th Oct 2024. 21:05 NMCmassive, Sat 5 Oct 21:00 Away! With the new keeper, the back line are starting at the half Way line any time he has the ball. You can`t be offside from a goal kick and tobi can clear the park from his 6-yard line. The whole team starts further up the park and when we win 2nd balls, we are already In the opponents half. 144. Author: Alter Ego Date: Sat 5th Oct 2024. 21:12 Buffy come on surely anyone can see wee have an attacking team/formation to play with the squad we have?? God knows what training is like! It’s just so frustrating how McPake puts that team out every week..play Sutherland, new loan guy BUT stop playing this negative football week in/out. Boring pish so get the ball up the park and play some football!!!….its not that hard Mon the Pars! Reply |
145. Author: wee eck Date: Sat 5th Oct 2024. 21:13 I note neither answered my query about being at the game. Anyone who was will confirm that Mehmet didn`t consistently play the ball out from the back today. Alter Ego, I don`t know where you got the idea that I`m part of Admin. I simply express my own opinions on here and challenge other people`s when I don`t agree with them. I thought that was the purpose of a forum. Reply |
146. Author: weemike Date: Sat 5th Oct 2024. 21:17 I`ve noticed that since he has returned, he has played out from the back less. And if someone was AT the game or not, it is completely irrelevant. Reply |

148. Author: NMCmassive Date: Sat 5th Oct 2024. 21:27 weemike, Sat 5 Oct 21:05 It’s not really changing how the back line plays tho. Yeah, it’s moved us much further up the park but how we’re setting up defensively hasn’t really changed. We’re still not a high pressing team. When they get the ball we still tend to drop back and fall into a formation. If we had any pace in the backline, we may have tried to be much more high pressing. I actually think young and foggarty look like they may be quick enough but I may be wrong. COYP Reply |

151. Author: Socks Date: Sat 5th Oct 2024. 21:32 There`s no doubt he has a long kick, but I actually don`t think we used it enough in the games he played. Both keepers have recently tried to play a mix of long and short stuff from the back so it`s just not true to say that one plays long and the other short. It just seems one of these over-simplifications that people seem fond of - the other recent one was people who were convinced that 3 at the back was the problem, sometimes coming after games when we hadn`t even played 3 at the back. I don`t think McPake doesn`t try to win games, I just think there are so many deficiencies in his team that it`s difficult to do so. We`re generally poor as a team when we need to come back from a goal down. We also don`t handle games that well when we have a lead, though part of that is probably now panic because we`ve won so rarely. I hate short, slow, ineffective football so trying to be a bit more direct is welcome and stops us giving the ball away so often in stupid positions but it`s difficult to get far with it because we don`t have a credible direct option. We haven`t for years and it`s a team conditioned into playing over-passy rubbish for at least 3 managers in a row that then has little to offer when the style has to change. We`re utterly incapable of hitting teams with quick, direct attacks. Our players have been conditioned to think about playing slow and keeping the ball, and so even though we are a bit more direct than we`ve been, they often just aren`t minded to do anything quickly and fall back to going slow and backwards, or stopping and taking a second, when what is needed is a simple quick pass. We`re now also losing some pretty terrible goals, and that`s a combination that`s going to make things pretty hard. As a team, we look utterly bereft of anything. We need a lift and a change pretty soon. But I do think people often want to over-simplify things which puts the focus on things that are only symptoms. Reply |
152. Author: summeragent Date: Sat 5th Oct 2024. 21:32 wee eck, Sat 05 Oct 21:13 It’s not just about playing Mehmet getting the ball up the park, although there is a massive contrast between him and Tobi. It’s his positioning in the box, his inability to come for balls, flapping when he should be catching. He seems to be disconnected from the defence and this is leading to errors and the lose of stupid goals! Reply |

The whole team/game is played further up the pitch with the new keeper due to his style and kicking ability. It`s funny how an on loan player with such strengths can dictate how a team plays. Especially when he won`t be here permanently Reply |

Mehmet came back in against Partick. Reply |

156. Author: weemike Date: Sat 5th Oct 2024. 22:00 So the backline is still defending like it did before? NO! They....and the rest of the team are 15-20 yards further up the pitch. Anytime the new keeper has the ball, our back line are STARTING at the halfway line. When Mehmet has the ball they are between the halfway line and 18 yrd line. Jesus suffering man....its fundamentals. Post Edited (Sat 05 Oct 22:02) Reply |

158. Author: weemike Date: Sat 5th Oct 2024. 22:11 NMCmassive, Sat 5 Oct 22:01 So what happens when the other team gets the ball? They are closer to their own goal and further away from ours by default. The whole team is further up the park....and get this....the game is played that wee bit further away from our goal! All because a keeper can kick a ball the full length of the pitch and is comfortable as a sweeper. Reply |

160. Author: weemike Date: Sat 5th Oct 2024. 22:27 Very good Mike! Now are we playing a high pressing game or do we prefer to hold a formation and try and contain them? That depends on the situation. But I don`t know why you are widening the topic of conversation. We are talking about the defensive positioning, not the philosophy. Press only really works from front to back. So, losing the ball in midfield as the result of a 2nd ball means that a press won`t normally work. Unless you have Kante. Reply |
