Topic: A Heartfelt Apology
1. Author:  GG Riva
Date: Sat 8th Feb 2025. 06:56

I deeply regret and am truly sorry for the angst, consternation, offence, and upset inadvertently generated by my thread yesterday. It was intended to be a celebration of the significant strides made in the attitudes towards overt racism often seen at Scottish football matches in my lifetime. I am particularly proud of our club, which must have one of the most ethnically diverse squads in the country.

The thread heading, Pitch Black, was taken from a book of the same name, by Emy Onuora, in which he chronicles the horrific racial abuse black players were forced to endure in British football, in the not so distant past. I posted a link to a free preview on Google.

Unfortunately, the careless way I constructed my OP left me open to accusations of casual racism by sharing a flippant remark made by a good friend. Even worse, when this was pointed out to me by other posters, I stubbornly refused to accept that this was the case, convinced that I had not posted anything controversial or wrong.

Eventually, as more posters began to question the wisdom of my post, I caved in and asked Admin to delete it. Later last night, my friend called me. He wasn`t best pleased that I had quoted him, even if it was anonymously. He agreed with those posters who suggested that the post had racist undertones and made us look like racists.

I`m certainly old enough to know better. A self-imposed suspension to allow for a period of reflection sounds like a good idea at the moment.

Whilst I didn’t contribute to the thread, I read it in the way you intended GG

Edited to add, I wouldn’t beat yourself up about it too much… you’ve reflected, and acted upon that - more than most would have

Don`t be daft GG. Some people look for offence everywhere and they are the ones contributing to the problem while acting like saviours. The intent was clear but sadly there are people on here who are obvious trolls and set out to twist the meaning of a very thoughtful post.

Well done GG.

I did give a sharp intake of breath when I saw your headline, but the context was a genuine attempt to reflect change in our society and celebrate our multi-culturalism.

Apologising and having a self-imposed break - no matter the topic - some other posters could learn from you.

Being offended by every little thing is the in thing just now, being offended for someone else seems to be the peak virtue signal.
I wouldn`t stress GG.

it`s a pity it went off topic.

GG, I can`t remember anything in our post that made me think twice about it being questionable so no need for self flagellation. And please no self imposed exposed, you`re arguably the best poster on the site.

And although my eyes were open
They just might as well be closed

GG as others have said.....in my opinion there was nothing racist in either the heading or your post. Enjoy your Saturday.

I wouldn`t expect that you need to do more reflection that you already have GG, you have clearly reflected enough.

Maybe others might need to though.

With that in mind, Brian, the thread didn`t go off-topic at all. It strayed less from its topic (it was about counting black people, in case you`ve forgotten) than most threads on here do, for instance the "players in" thread went on a tangent about religion for a time.

Wotsit, GG states he asked for the thread to be deleted. Looks like Brian and the team were simply following that request.

Fair. I got carried away and have edited my post to remove that part. Thanks for keeping me right Ipswich.

GG I must admit to being a bit surprised by the heading of your post, but found nothing offensive within the post itself. Despite being a relatively new poster, I`ve read the forum for many years and have always enjoyed your comments and opinions. Also, as a former DAFC employee, I`m drawn to informed and knowledgeable posts like your own. Keep it up!

I’m glad that the thread was removed at GG Riva’s request and not to appease a couple of virtue signallers on here.
There was nothing offensive in the post and we should not be bullied into false guilt by those who seek offence at every opportunity

No need to apologise as the words and sentiment were with good intention

I wouldn`t post on this topic on a forum, as it`s a public forum, and even though I don`t think anyone that posts here have bad intentions, words are badly written often, also can pile on.

I see no need to exclude yourself at all, nor feel bad in any way, but I definitely would avoid that type of post as on a forum can escalate into something else.

Looks like the overwhelming opinion on this thread GG is a very big appreciation of your contributions and a wish for them to continue without a break. I would endorse that, and coming from one who may have been responsible for a tangent or two myself, where they contain helpful or indeed vital truths, they are never futile.

When I read the thread it had only 3 or 4 posts on it but unless it changed course I can`t think of anything you need to apologise for GG. I read it as positive commentary on how attitudes at football have improved with the changing demographics in the country.

I commented on the post and only realised that its gone. Not sure why either, didn’t read anything out of line and looked like an honest and open discussion regarding past/current players from an ethnic minority.

If someone did complain after I last seen it then it’s very strange behaviour. And don’t think your pal needs to worry about folk thinking badly of him as doesn’t seem like any bad conversations were had.

It’s not racist to have an open and honest discussion regarding players of race within the squad.
