Topic: Did you know RE Chalmers

Was talking to my mate, who’s a pro footballer and was saying about Tidser playing Chalmers at left back …

Turns out he’s actually a Left Back by trade so to speak. They played together at Motherwell and he was left back there. Tidser obviously sees something in him there

We know….

What an opportunity we missed in 2014.

So why are so many questioning it like we are asking him to do something he hasn’t ever done before

To be fair on recent performances it looks like he’s never played there before

He,s worse at left back than he is in midfield

Lots of players played in different positions in their youth. Andy Robertson was originally a centre midfielder but has not played there in his entire senior career (to my knowledge) Chalmers absolutely cannot play at left back. He is a competent centre midfielder when played the right players but he looks extremely uncomfortable at left back.

As much as I think he`s overly derided, he`s not been good at left back, teams will target him and we`ll be starting with an exploitable weakness.

I don`t wanna go down like disco.

lets be serious since the start of time there has been scapegoats when the team has had poor form/runs of results.

Jamie Mccunnie/Ross Millen are 2 notable examples that stand out in the modern era where you would hear a groan from the crowd when there name was mentioned. 1 stray pass from whoever was playing next to them, not even a batted eyelid, 1 stray pass from them and crowd right on them baying for blood.

McCunnie played a few games in centre midfield and was decent from memory but definitely was one for the booboys when he played majority of games at right back.

I`d be in the minority but I actually really liked Jamie McCunnie. Nothing special and kept his game simple I thought

Millen received a hard time because he wasn’t Williamson, even though he had more end product.

Dorrans probably our most recent scapegoat, despite being absolutely fine whilst playing for us (excluding the game at Ibrox).

Players get dubbed scapegoats for a reason. And usually that reason is because they are consistently poor. All the players getting mentioned here are in that category. Not always their fault, sometimes the manager is at fault for signing them or playing them or putting them in the wrong position. No point in getting indignant at fans who voice their opinions about it though. It`s all part of football.

Skinner had an absolute howler in a match (Livingston possibly?) when we were pretty comfortable at 1-0 towards the end of the gameand went onto lose. That seemed to seal his fate with a lot of people and something he never really shook off.

I can remember plenty of `scapegoats` from my time supporting the pars.

Justin Skinner definitely got the worst treatment that I can remember, but there were plenty of decent enough players who attracted the boo boys for absolutely no reason. I remember Stevie Crawford getting absolute pelters for `not working hard enough` despite being our best player by a street.

As a general rule, I wouldn`t place any value in the opinion of the `casual fan` - very few of them have a clue what they`re talking about. I include myself as a `casual fan` in that respect.

McCunnie was excellent when he moved in to midfield. Similar to Scott Muirhead who was signed as a winger and struggled, but did well when shifted to left-back.

It`s been done to death, but Dorrans was decent in the vast majority of games he played, albeit not as influential as hoped when we signed him, based on his pedigree.

The rage brigade just refused to see it because they reckoned he earnt a lot of money, got a couple of injuries and the season was going badly overall.

Yeah Clark took a lot of abuse that he only got a game as his dad was on the coaching staff but he was pretty good and scored goals for us.

Chalmers started at left back and for reasons we are know was moved from that position but not sure when. Amazing how someone who didn’t cut it as a full back can suddenly be expected to make it in midfield at this level like it’s somehow an interchangeable position. The exact same goes for Todd who has shown he’s not good enough at this level in the middle of the park despite being a good full back the year we went down.

By this same logic let’s stick comrie in the middle on sat and surely he’ll be good enough right?

Before wee eck and do a no1 come on, plenty players have improved playing in different positions but those will be the exception to the rule and many who have struggled at full back won’t have gone on to make good centre midfielders at the same level.

The post below replying to me is by one of .nets finest champions of mediocrity!

Chalmers played left back during his Celtic days, apparently kept a certain Kieran Tierney out of the team, wonder what happened to him?🤔
