Topic: Did you know RE Chalmers

I`m confused now. Are we being criticised for turning a left back into a midfielder or vice versa?

FWIW, I`ve never considered Todd to be a full back. I think it was Hughes who played him there for a wee while but I thought it was just part of his football education.

Chalmers started at left back and for reasons we are know was moved from that position but not sure when. Amazing how someone who didn’t cut it as a full back can suddenly be expected to make it in midfield at this level like it’s somehow an interchangeable position. The exact same goes for Todd who has shown he’s not good enough at this level in the middle of the park despite being a good full back the year we went down.

Dripping with negativity as usual.

It`s not that uncommon for a good full back to be moved into midfield, especially if they`re dropping down a league or just graduating from youth level.

I assume his manager at the time decided he was good in midfield, rather than, he couldn`t cut it at full back so we`ll dump him in midfield.

It`s also fairly common for a midfielder to fill in at full back as was the case for Matty Todd. He only moved position to play there because we had no-one else and he was just getting established at first team level.

Chalmers played left back during his Celtic days, apparently kept a certain Kieran Tierney out of the team, wonder what happened to him?🤔

I assume you mean the Celtic youth team when Chalmers was 16 and Tierney was 13 ??

Chalmers played twice for the first team at Celtic, both as a substitute i think.....

I want to express my shame at being one Muirhead`s boo boys. I was obviously younger but I used to think he was terrible.

I can also remember my rage whenever anybody got on big Sol`s back. He was effing great and went on to bigger things, proving the doubters wrong. He wasn`t always perfect but neither were any other players in the squad at the time.

I can also us signings a couple of players from our rivals (considered their best players), Junior from St mirren and I think F*lkirks captain but I can`t remember his name but he was great for them. Both turned out to be rubbish for us.

Didn`t Noel Hunt get a lot of stick too? He was a great player that tried his heart out whenever he got a chance, which wasn`t very often with CrawSter in front of him in the pecking order.

Davie Moss was the guy we signed from Falkirk. He was alright, then fell away.

Muirhead had plenty ability but got a rough time as he used to shirk out of tackles.

Not even cliched 50/50 more like 70/30 in his favour and he would go in like a five year old dipping their toe in the bath to check the water wasn`t too hot.

I had an issue with Muirhead, not because of his ability, but his attitude.

Steven Bell was a great example of a target for `boo boys` / scapegoat.

In his first season with us, his first after playing part-time football, he played in a strange right side of midfield position and got absolute pelters on here and from the stands. Everything he did that was less than perfect had folk on his back.

In his second season he played in the middle and looked like the best midfielder in the championship, and I think that season was eventually voted player of the year. He was a proper box to box all round midfielder. He scored a few goals too, admittedly with brilliant support/service from Cardle, Gibson and Graham in the wide positions.

I thought of him here as he was a great example of making fans eat their words.

I don`t remember Bell getting that much stick? Most people realised he was making a step up and was being played out of position.

Skinner was a different sort of player from what we were used to and often played as a ball playing sweeper which was ahead of its time really. He was fine but because he was quite slow and because he tried to pass it out from the back, we gave up a lot of chances when he played there. Not his fault though.

McCunnie was poor at right back I think, and we`d had some sold right backs over the years. He did look reasonable when he moved into the midfield though which was a surprise. He`s now a referee.

Ross Millen was also iffy at right back but in his defence he came up with some clutch penalties and set piece deliveries and went on to have a decent career. Rooney was pretty awful yet went on to have a brilliant career before spoiling it by being a racist moron.

Mendes was never really a boo boy mostly because we barely saw him! Was a coup getting him and we all looked forward to seeing him but I think he got injured then had mental health issues which meant he barely played. He was great in the friendly against Feyenoord though. Moss was also a coup as he was Falkirk captain but he was generally poor for us. Having said that, he did have a habit of making late runs into the box and scoring big goals so I`ll cut him some slack. He did look.overweight and slow though. A Rolling Moss gathers three stone we used to say.
