I see Arsenal have picked up a young lad from St Johnstone.

`Arsenal and St Johnstone have agreed a deal for 15-year-old Callan Hamill and the Perth club will bank an initial six-figure fee for the Scotland youth full-back, with realistic add-ons and sell-ons likely to swell that transfer fee significantly. (The Courier)`.

One deal like that probably explains why some clubs invest in Academies. The big English clubs obviously keep a keen eye on what`s happening up here.

I have known Callan since he was 4 years old. My daughter played football with his big sister. He was constantly playing with a football.

He owes a lot to his hard working Mum, she drove him all over the country to training and matches. He scored for Scotland under 19s away in Cyprus 2 days ago.

Must be a great player to be picked up by Arsenal. Their Academy set up is bang on...I reckon there`s probably more prem regulars from the arsenal academy right now than any other prem team.

Maybe Man City have a few more, thinking about it, but Arsenal`s Academy is top top top.

They have progressed from the days of Jim Will and David Grondin😀

This is an interesting topic maybe for another thread and one of the questions raised more generally that football is an expensive game to be involved in these days - I.e. the costs to play (if there are coaches, pitch hire, etc.) and the costs to get to games, etc. for example would Callan be playing his dream if his mum couldn’t afford it.
I am not sure how it is funded these days. When I was under 16, I would have been picked up by cars of the senior players, but expect that because of all the issues at some clubs with child welfare that probably has all stopped now. Great news for the lad and great to hear he is doing really well.

My 5yr old grandson has just started with Bayside, he is over the moon with his training kit, full strip plus a half zip top. It cost his parents £40, but he looks the part along with the other 16 laddies.
I hear that Pars Foundation aren`t attracting so many, don`t know why, maybe lack of coaches ?

My 2 granddaughters are with Raith ladies and are really well treated with their kits and sponsorship, U/16 and U/12.

Pars Foundation are putting an extra 2018 team on completely demand. No idea where to get that story but not true.

I coach with Swift’s and we’ve just taken 4 backside kids on as not happy

This is why youth football is middleclass now, kids families who can`t afford this lost to the game.

NIMBYism plays a big role too. `No ball games` signs everywhere.

Agreed and astro is expensive to hire, if you can get a booking .
I think Andy Mclaren ex Dundee United used to do coaching in deprived areas of Glasgow, where you may more chance of getting a prodigious talent .

Still remember `Accessing` the pitches at the VIDA late at night to avoid the wild hire costs
