22. Author: wee eck Date: Sat 26th Jul 2025. 19:17 MacLeod and Bray certainly brought a bit of energy and enthusiasm when they came on. Gilmour is going to be the anchor in midfield although I think he lost a tackle today - the only one I can remember in the last three games! Andrew Tod could be one of those invaluable players - a non-striker who can score goals regularly. I`d find it hard to pick someone out as the team only played well in the second half but I`d like to say Bene has been excellent in the last three games and has lead by example despite the dark cloud which must be hanging over him just now. 24. Author: Berkey Date: Sat 26th Jul 2025. 20:39 K76 and Jeffrey, out of interest how can you say John Todd is physically up for the challenge? Has he ever played a game against a club in our league which as we know is chock full of big physical experienced players. He’s done well in the 3 wins but they have been against 2 part time league 2 teams and a league 1 team which has been largely gutted due to financial issues. Let’s see how these guys are doing after a fair few championship games, same with Andrew tod, the standard in the championship is a massive jump. 26. Author: Jeffery Date: Sat 26th Jul 2025. 22:43 Berkey, Sat 26 Jul 20:39 It`s Tod. I was only commenting on today`s performance not his physical ability in a different competition. Not a clue if he`ll be decent in the championship but it seems he`ll play a part. He won headers against a big strong striker who looked about 6`4" today, so it`s possible. Reply |
27. Author: Buster_Brown Date: Sat 26th Jul 2025. 22:48 Would have given it to Gilmour myself but J.Tod did play really well so can have no complaints about him getting it. Thought McLeod & Bray took the performance up a level when they came on, McLeod did the same on Tuesday. Look forward to seeing more of them both. Reply |

29. Author: wee eck Date: Sat 26th Jul 2025. 22:58 Berkey always has reservations about players who maybe haven`t played at a higher level. I find that odd because I would have thought someone who likes to assess players` strengths and weaknesses would have a pretty strong opinion on whether he thinks they are capable of coping with a higher standard. NL, like all managers, has to make these judgements every time he looks at a potential signing from a lower league or maybe even from a different country. He doesn`t have the luxury of deferring a decision until he sees the player performing at the required level. It`s the main difference between an `armchair` manager and a `dug-out` manager. Reply |
30. Author: Berry Date: Sat 26th Jul 2025. 23:13 Agree with Berkey (& Socks comments on the match thread) on J Tod. The boys young and he’s got a bright future ahead of him but think we need to temper expectations a little. I wasn’t blown away by his performance, certainly not MOTM, he tripped, made a dodgy pass, one of Stirlings chances was a cross that he let go past him and failed to deal with which Mehmet saved. He had one good run forward with the ball which was positive and the rest of the game his passing was better but we were under very little pressure. If I go back to the Hamilton game, thought he should’ve won the ball from Shaw before he scored. He’s definitely not better than Mullen right now, he’s gone through a bit of a rough patch granted but thought he was better of the two today, got the winner for us at Hamilton and was excellent for us last season. He’s a really good prospect and will benefit from these run outs but I don’t think we should be relying on him as a starter in the league at the moment though. Post Edited (Sat 26 Jul 23:15) Reply |
31. Author: coventrypar Date: Sat 26th Jul 2025. 23:26 Gilmour hasn’t put a foot wrong since he joined us. He might turn out to be the signing of the season. I think him and Amade are a perfect pairing. While I give him MOM … Bene too has been excellent and is much needed with two youngsters beside him. 34. Author: Berkey Date: Sun 27th Jul 2025. 07:53 Wee eck I’ve got reservations about young players who haven’t played at our current level or many levels below being talked about as ready made championship players and future Scotland youth prospects. Bray and Kearney have at least plenty games under their belt but it’s still a step up for them. Tod hasn’t even been on loan to a team in the SFL so we’re basing all this on 4 matches, it’s very premature. He might well come onto a game this season but let’s have a look after we’re played your ayr’s and Morton’s etc. Given mullan’s current form we’re going into this season very reliant on Bene will be interesting to see how that plays out both on the pitch and in the courts. 35. Author: wee eck Date: Sun 27th Jul 2025. 08:55 It would be interesting to see your recruitment and selection policy. It sounds as if you would never take a chance on anyone but experienced, proven players. That`s just unrealistic for a club like ours. Reply |
36. Author: cammypar 1995 Date: Sun 27th Jul 2025. 09:59 For balance, I think Tod’s done alright so far. Let’s not forget the struggles we had against Forfar at home last season, so there’s clearly been some improvement. That said, we do have a habit of talking up the youngsters a bit too much at times. Tod’s held his own so far but the real test will come when he’s up against experienced Championship players week in, week out. Personally, I don’t think he’s better than Mullen at this stage, even though Mullen hasn’t exactly looked convincing either so far this season. c'mon the pars Reply |
37. Author: wee eck Date: Sun 27th Jul 2025. 10:06 Our usual way of talking up youngsters is to suggest they go out on loan. For me John Tod has more pluses than minuses about his game and he`d be better improving his game with us than with a club in a lower league. NL must have seen loads of young players coming through during his career and he seems happy to play him just now. Like most young players he`ll probably be rested from tine to time. Reply |
38. Author: Buster_Brown Date: Sun 27th Jul 2025. 10:11 wee eck, Sun 27 Jul 10:06 Totally agree with Wee Eck here, think both Tod’s will be better off staying as part of the squad and given the space to continue to develop. If both show the consistent levels to be starters, then that’s what they should be. Reply |

You write that the real tests will come when they face experienced championship players, week in week out, yet when I suggest that we need experienced players in to help, you say we are doing fine? Maybe I’ve misinterpreted your intentions, so please correct me if I’m wrong. ![]() It`s bloody tough being a legend Ron Atkinson - 1983 Reply |
