Ahoy!Ahoy!, Fri 22 Aug 22:50

Why have we not at least looked at Oli Shaw? He would’ve done a lot more than what was on show tonight.

How do you know we haven`t?

Fairly sure Shaw was at Hibs with Lennon previously.

Hasn`t a physical presence, constantly throwing himself to the ground, first touch is awful, freekicks are shocking ,not even an upgrade on Lewis McCann.

A loan period with a league one side might do him some good.

Going from league 2 straight to the championship was probably a big ask.

Here we go, a .net pile in ffs.
He got no service from an utterly benign midfield, granted i`ll agree with the falling down bit, that was getting on my nerves.

I don`t wanna go down like disco.

A think he found his level with Edinburgh city , simply not good enough at this level , which unfortunately is the case for a fair few of these players . What Lennon see’s on Oakley booth is also baffling .

A bit harsh regarding Young. He was one of the few in the first half that brought the ball down and passed, the rest were happy to play hoof ball or head tennis.
He is not the type of player who is going to dribble past three players and score.
He needs to be dovetailing off another striker and getting service. He got none last night. But credit where it’s due Rovers defence was excellent and the hardly gave us a sniff.

With regards to ToB I have still not seen what he can bring to the team. Gilmour, Amade, Bray, M Todd are better options. Can see him and Otoo being benched. At least Otoo can fill a couple of positions if needed.

What an opportunity we missed in 2014.

We lack experience and aggression in the first half. I would have played Hamilton with Benny to counter Stevenson and Easton.
I believe the comments on Ooto are unfair as he is usually one of our better players.
Mullen is a bomb scare as he is wasteful and risk-taking when it`s unnecessary. If he continues in the team he will cost us many more goals unless he is sorted out.
The forwards didn`t have anything to work on with us constantly punting high balls up that ended in games of head tennis that we usually lost.
The second half was better but little cutting edge until Kane came on.
By the way, why did Lennon take so long to bring him on?

Young isnt ready for the championship but when the club cannot get one championship level striker in the door they will have to keep playing him and hope it suddenly clicks.

Poor touch, never made anything stick and offered us nothing to build on further up the pitch. Exactly the same as the Airdrie game where he fell over the ball unchallenged more than once. If the window closes and this is the guy we’re relying on to get us goals while Kane is out then we’re heading for mid table a long way off 4th.

There was a thread on here recently about the reason youngsters never made it at EEP in the past. First reason is they never got the opportunity. Now we have a few trying to come through. The other reason which puts managers off is the fan treatment of those youngsters. We have a few coming through now and it will result in yesterday’s score sometimes when playing youths. They are learning. For all rovers had the ball they did nothing with it first half and we were better second. If we stop these threads we might get more highs than lows.

Good comment.

We`ve gone down the road of more experience before, and what we ended up with (more than once), was a bunch of toxic has beens and perma crocks.

We`ve got a really good squad of youngsters (some we paid fees for) that we have actually targeted, they will make mistakes, some of them might not make the grade, but some already are.

We will add experience, this has been stated, but we will put some thought into it I`m sure.

This season I will be happy if we comfortably avoid relegation spots, push for a play off place-we have been fighting relegation/relegated for 4 years now! There`s a lot of transfer windows to make up for that.

Agree with the last 3 posts. The negativity in this forum certainly does nothing to help young players who happen to read it. We’re not going to have a better coaching setup than we have now, let’s give them every chance in succeeding in the development of a really young squad that contains more young prospects than we’ve had in a long time.

Okay mullan had a bad one but it wasn’t the youngsters at fault for the defeat and performance on Friday, it was the more experienced members of the team who disappeared.

We’ve 2 players who are 23 in the next month who have had 3 seasons in our team and a 25 year old who just retreated into their shells yet again when the going got tough.

We’ve got some really promising youngsters coming in but we need to get better experienced pro’s alongside them.

I actually think a few of the younger lads we’ve brought in do look solid. The worry for me is whether we end up going down the same road as before of chucking them in week after week and expecting them to kick on when in reality some of them are already at their level.

There’s got to be a balance. You can’t just play kids and hope you sell them for millions. You need to judge where their actual ceiling is and not get blinded by the fairytale of the local lad comes good. For every one that makes it, there’s hundreds probably thousands who don’t. Players finding their level isn`t a bad thing we saw that with chalmers will do a job in L1. Struggled with the lack of time on the ball in the championship.

It’s about blending them with experienced pros so they’re learning the right way. Judging if they are ready to play at that level and can cope with demands of championship football (John Tod). Spotting early whether they’re improving or have they found their limit ability wise.

Accepting that some are squad players at best is something I think we managed pretty well over the summer (Hamilton).

I agree with everything you’re saying.

I think Connor Young is a decent young striker. We’re asking him to lead the line for us and he’s struggling a bit but as mentioned-he’s stepping up 2 divisions. To me, time in League 1 would be great for him but if we can’t get a couple of strikers in he’s going to be playing an active role for us.

And before it gets said again, he’s a step in front of both the Sutherlands at this moment in time. That’s not a knock on anyone, that’s just going by what I’ve seen.

I think he has probably been brought in 6 months too early. He needs time to develop. I think given we are looking for a striker NL probably recognises that. Putting in young players too early can be counter productive. Particularly in a position where he will be judged on the number of goals he scores. He will come good, just needs time.

Young defo has the potential, we just don’t move teams around enough to create any space for him and with a lack of support from midfield and the fact we never get in behind to get balls into the box it’s a hard shift for anyone up there.

Start doing that and the goals will come, he’s got the nouse and the instinct I reckon, just needs a goal.
