Reports of racial abuse aimed at him last night from a Benfica player after excessively celebrating his goal last night. Game delayed for 10 minutes and Mourinho defending Benfica as a club that wouldn’t be racist due to Eusebio being a legend there.

Is he the only one reporting racial abuse, or is he receiving more due to his on-field actions? Or, potentially, does he report any sort of insult as a racial slur?

Im 100% not defending the potential abuser here, as an investigation will naturally have to take place, but in the words of Balotelli “why always him?”

The player allegedly making the comments pulling his shirt up over his mouth before anything is "said" certainly isnt a great look.

Unless anyone else around has heard it then its a case of 2 peoples polar opposite accounts and no evidence so very hard to determine an outcome.

He`s not the only black player to have claimed these things are still happening in world football. Maybe it`s just getting more publicity because of the level he`s at. I really doubt he`s making the claims up. he has every right to celebrate his goal without having to endure racial abuse.

Good post, TrancePar.

I wouldn`t say every player dishing out racial abuse is necessarily racist, but they leave themselves wide open to the charge. Some will just be looking to wind up their opponent to put him off his game or maybe even get him red carded. Making racist remarks is completely on another level from having a go at an opponent who has a big nose or red hair, however, even if the intention is the same.

^^^ Every level of dished out racial abuse is 100% racist.

We must never fall into any trap that that dictates otherwise. This will be ill-educated

Of course, racial abuse is racist, Dave. I wasn’t arguing or excusing it. I`m suggesting that sometimes the intention can be to try and put an opponent off his game. It`s a stupid and ill-advised tactic, but some footballers can be guilty of opening their mouths without thinking.

Should be zero tolerance. Nothing else comes in to the equation (celebrations, antagonising opposition etc.)

Racism is racism and should never be justified.

I see that Benfica are defending their player, ultimately unless there was a 3rd party who heard what was said it’s looking unlikely any charge can be successful.

Nah, some players are idiots rather than racist idiots. Not suggesting they should be given a free ride. Some players who give out racial abuse have black players as teammates, with whom they get on perfectly well......

😳

Having coloured friends/teammates is not insurance against racist abuse, idiot or not.

We might just have to agree to disagree, Dave. Maybe I`m not explaining myself very well. Racial abuse is racial abuse - no argument.

Some players are racist and dish out racial abuse. Others will do whatever they can to upset an opponent by pouncing on their physical appearance. I used red hair or a big nose as examples further up. Some will also include skin tone - not at all clever, but it`s naive to think that some players will not do anything to get an edge during a game if they can get away with it.

I`m not for a second suggesting it`s in any way acceptable and players who are guilty of making racial slurs should be hammered (and educated) whether they are inherently racist or not, since there`s no way of knowing their innermost thoughts.

Where do you stand on sectarian abuse? Is it racist to call someone a Fenian b or an Orange b? These insults are commonplace at Scottish football matches when some prominent teams are playing. Are the Irish a different "race" from Scots, or is skin tone the only yardstick.

I`m of the opinion that there`s no such thing as "race" - it`s just a term invented to segregate people. We`re all members of the human race and any other claim is seriously flawed and only adopted by the hard of thinking.

Sectarian abuse is the absolute pits as it`s one person`s hatred for another`s set of beliefs.

It`s illogical and utterly stupid.

I suspect the vast majority of culprits don`t even know what they are angry about or the history behind it. It seems bred into them.

All because Henry VIII fancied Anne 🙄

I understand the point GG Riva is saying. Sledging. That used to be a big part of professional sport, trying to get under the skin of your opponent, wind them up, make them lose their composure, their focus. Think of the Merv Hughes inspired Aussie cricket teams of the past. It`s not nice, but it`s sport, some want to win so much they will do and say anything that`ll give them an advantage.

I`ve been on the end of abuse for my appearance, race, in the past, and it`s just words

I don’t particularly like Vini but accusations sounds pretty damning and the defence particularly weak in ESPN reporting;

“Real Madrid`s Kylian Mbappé told Spanish TVE after Tuesday`s game that he and other players heard Prestianni say "that Vini is a monkey five times".

Benfica argued that Madrid players could not have heard alleged racist abuse because of the noise at the stadium and the distance between the players.”

When was genetics discarded?

"All humans share approximately 99.9% of their genetic makeup. While the entire genome consists of 3 billion base pairs, only a tiny fraction (0.1%) varies between individuals, accounting for differences in physical characteristics and disease susceptibility. This 99.9% similarity applies to any two human beings, confirming that all humans are remarkably identical."

We`re all the same, imo. If we all thought this way and acted accordingly, instead of looking for irrelevant differences to pigeonhole people, the world would be a better place.

Thanks, for understanding the point I was trying to get across, red star. and explaining it much better. Look, it could be that every single person who makes a racist remark is a racist but I believe there are exceptions that can be attributed to ignorance and stupidity.

I agree with what you said here and previously.
Abuse, whether from the stands or on the pitch is primarily to invoke a reaction.
Yes, there are actual racists.
East Europeans are famous for it but in general terms, it is done to try gain an advantage.
A good example was back in the 80’s Victor Kasule had a bag of banana skins thrown at him while playing for Albion Rovers against us.
The very same fans who abused him would later say “I hope he signs for us

Zwei Pints Bier und ein Päckchen Chips bitte
