GG is correct - clubs will never be allowed to influence the selection of match referees.

Going back years Big Jock had a particularly strong aversion to Bobby Davidson - but no consideration was given to him not refereeing future Celtic games following the 1970 Scottish cup final which was the root cause of their bad relationship.

`The SFA don’t appoint officials to SPFL fixtures.`

I would still make the same pointb regardless of who appoints them.

`A slippery slope, wee eck. While I agree that Nicholson was worse than useless, clubs cannot ever be allowed to influence the choice of referee for their games.`

I wasn`t suggesting clubs should influence the choice of referee. I`d actually be interested to know the factors that do influence the choice of referee. Are they drawn out of a hat?

I know you weren`t suggesting that, but if those who appoint referees were to think e.g. We better not give Nicholson the Pars v Partick game because he and Neil Lennon fell out earlier this season, then that`s a club employee influencing what should be a random (arbitrary) decision...

The highlights are now up so you can all judge the Todd incident for yourselves.

All the radio and tv pundits agreed it was, at the very least, a foul. Also a lot of agreement that big Ash’s treatment of Tod deserved bookings!

Maybe a clear case for VAR?

The issue with the clear case for VAR is the cost. How are Inverness, Arbroath etc of this world going to be able to stump up for it?

and all it’s going to change is we’ll sit here at the end of games and go how on earth did the ref and var miss that foul because you can’t 100% say the foul was in the box so they would go ahh we don’t want to make that decision just stick with the on field var just shifted the blame from big decisions from the refs head to the vars head

While the cost is reducing all the time, I’d agree it’s an extra shared cost for clubs. In bigger games like last night’s, I’m suggesting VAR might be useful.

Does it have high fixed costs of installation which mean it is not economical to install it for the odd game, so it`s got to be for the season and all clubs would have to comply?

No idea, Wee Eck, but technology is getting smaller and cheaper. I’m really meaning VAR in principle.

The Calciopoli scandal in Serie A, which was uncovered in 2006, was basically exactly that. Two referee designators went along with the wishes of senior employees of several clubs, including Milan, Lazio and Juventus. The latter`s Mr Fixit, Luciano Moggi had the most evidence against him. He was suspended sine die. Juve were stripped of 2 titles and demoted to Serie B. The only major club not implicated in the scandal was Inter and they were awarded the 2006 Scudetto. It later turned out that the man who tapped into the mobile phones of the Fixits was an Inter fan and he hadn`t felt it was necessary to flag up Inter`s involvement, but by this time, it was too late to sanction the Milan club, as the statute of limitations had been exceeded.

Just a few weeks ago, the current referee designator, Gianluca Rocchi, an Inter fan, has suspended himself after allegations that he obliged his club by not assigning refs they don`t like. 🙄

Seeing as these matches are aimed towards a place in the SPL then surely SPL level referees should be officiating?

Reffed our midweek 4-0 win at Airdrie in October, the 1-0 away defeat to Partick in November and the 3-2 defeat at home to Ayr just before Christmas.
