Topic: Australia bans social media for under-16s

Australia on Thursday approved a social media ban for children under 16 after a fiery debate that has gripped the nation, setting a benchmark for jurisdictions around the world with one of the strictest regulations targeting Big Tech.

The law requires tech giants, from Instagram and Facebook owner Meta to TikTok, to prevent minors from logging in or face fines of up to A$49.5 million. A trial of methods to enforce the ban will start in January, and the ban will take effect a year later.

The Social Media Minimum Age Bill sets Australia up as a test case for a growing number of governments that have legislated or said they plan to legislate an age restriction on social media amid concern about its mental health impact on young people.

Some countries, including France, have passed laws restricting minors` access without a parent`s permission, but the Australian ban is absolute. A full under-14s ban in Florida is being challenged in court on free speech grounds.

Getting the law passed after a marathon last day of Australia`s parliamentary year marks a political win for centre-left Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who goes to an election in 2025 amid sagging opinion polls. The ban faced opposition from privacy advocates and some child rights groups, but 77% of the population wanted it, according to the latest polls.

In other news, there has been a sudden rise in people claiming to have been born in 2008.

I wish they would ban Master Chef Australia. They eat anything that swims and kangaroo goolies are a delicacy

Need to regulate it like gambling companies have to -

1 account per person, verified with ID
Minimum age for sites but some access to certain pages/apps for teens - Facebook Messenger is a big comms tool these days
Group owners responsible for their page and any libellous comments
Account shut down for any forms of abuse

How this isn’t already a thing is incredible given the things you can see online now - X is just full of p*rn, assaults, racism and murders…..

Honestly why would you ask for more government intervention in your life?

X is filled with filth now. Zero filter at all. I used to use it for work stuff to check what the media were saying. It`s too risky to use on a work machine anymore as you see something innocent like "Edinburgh" trending and half the tweets are porn. Can you imagine what Musk could do if given a say in politics by Trump?!

Kids will always find ways around these bans. Usually it`ll be parents who are fed up being nagged to approve things and remember a million passcodes.

No filter? How about just following accounts that aren’t porn?

My X feed is still mostly cat videos.

Honestly, folk keep telling me X is full of P0$N, racism and everything else but I just don’t see it. I know it’s there it’s on every social media platform if you want to find it which leads me to my question, is it your algorithm showing you what you look at?

Last month, when they clicked on a trending topic labelled "Edinburgh," folk got a video of a man`s severed head being kicked along the Cowgate.

Everyone who was curious and clicked that trending topic got the same trauma-inducing video no matter how many cat videos they had in their feed.

I agree, I awoke on that Sunday morning to see my sister had sent me a message the night before about the cowgate being locked down. I didn`t have a clue what she was on about, so typed in "Cowgate" to Twitter and was confronted by a video of a body less head being teabagged.

Not what you need to see on a Sunday morning, or any time for that matter.

Twitter does seem to have gone downhill lately since that billionaire madman took it over.

I do quite welcome all the XXX filth and random acts of violence videos that pop up, although I know now not to open Twitter, or Instagram for that matter, when I`m in public

I saw that St Pauli FC became the first major football club to leave X the other week calling it a `hate machine`.

Left a hate machine and joined an open forum for nonces.

I actually opened a blue sky account just to see what all the fuss was about. One of the first posts on my feed was someone advocating for leniency towards MAP’s… (Minor attracted people if you’re unsure what MAP stands for. Basically an acronym that the woke mob/LGBTQIA2Splus brigade are pushing)

LGBTQIA2Splus isn’t something I’ve made up either. That’s what they want to be known as now. They’ll use the plus sign ➕ rather than the word but the plus sign won’t show when I write it in a post

I saw posts like that on X but not on Bluesky. The block system is very good.

I quite like the layout and your own chosen topics to follow. There’s a few Pars fans on it too - lovely wee souls 😂
