Topic: John Davidson - Baftas

I`ve not watched "I swear" yet but the clips I`ve seen of it look great and it won three awards so I`m assuming it`s good.

Unfortunately, John Davidson, who the film is based on, said a particularly "bad word" last night. This has legitimately upset quite a few people, but don`t they understand that this is uncontrollable? I`d assume part of the reason for making the film isn`t just to entertain, but to educate and inform people what it`s like living with tourettes. I`ve seen posts calling him racist as even if he can`t control his outburst he clearly knew the word. I know the word. I don`t go around yelling it, because I don`t have tourettes.

Perhaps I`m getting old, but why are people so desperate to get offended all the time? Yes, it was a disgusting word to use, but it wasn`t his fault and surely people can accept that? This is a guy who, in the film portrayal, laughs about someone dying from cancer and says he wants to ejaculate in someone`s tea!

Seconded. It`s been handled so well, it should be mandatory viewing for all High School kids.
I don`t often gush about how good movies are, but this is one I`ll recommend to everyone

I remember seeing a documentary some years ago about Tourette`s Syndrome and it featured a guy from the Borders who suffered from it. It may well have been John Davidson but I can`t be sure. He was anticipating meeting Prince Charles, as he was then, at some reception and was worried that he might suffer a tic and say something he shouldn`t have in his presence. Of course when he was introduced to Charlie he could be heard mumbling `F...ing Big Ears`! The Prince carried on as if nothing had happened.

"This has legitimately upset quite a few people, but don`t they understand that this is uncontrollable? ".
Well if they have a legitimate reason to be upset the fact that is uncontrollable is somewhat irrelevant to them being upset as you have just said that thier emotional response is entirely legitimate.

And although my eyes were open
They just might as well be closed

Yes its the same boy. The BBC documentary was part if his raising awareness and educating people about what Tourettes is. Visiting the Farm and shouts "im up to ma knees in F@cking Cow-Pat". The film is brilliant.

I felt the two black actors onstage could have diffused this tic from John immediately with a few words but I understand they are not trained to deal with Tourette’s Syndrome.
Nobody will feel worse than John Davidson right now and that is the real crime.

I`ll have a look at that later, Bpp. I`m not sure if it`s the same one. I didn`t think it was as long ago as 1988 but time flies!

They`re upset isn`t legitimate at all, it`s theatrics, maybe they need educated rather than continually pandered to.

I feel really sorry for John, it`s been an absolute pile on against him on social media, some folk are seething. Some proper ignorant people out there, maybe they should watch the film and try to educate themselves.
Anyone that gets into that sort of state because of words is bad enough, but when the words are said by someone who can`t help it that makes it even worse

The term used is one you can be legitimately upset to hear but also should understand that he in no way said it intentionally.

I agree. Alan Cumming, who was hosting, dealt with a tick earlier on and moved on pretty quickly.
Surely everyone that was presenting awards should have been made aware that he was in the audience and to acknowledge the tick and move forward?

The backlash he is receiving is totally unwarranted and making certain people look like uneducated delinquents.

ETA - this feels like a big miss from BAFTA to bring awareness to Tourette’s, and they waited too long to acknowledge it. John actually left of his own accord due to these ticks too.

There is a Lassie lives on my street with the same problem .. She works beside my Granddaughter in Tesco and you can see her shout and tic when on the checkouts .. She also plays the drum in the local pipe band .. Works with North Berwick in bloom watering plants .. and is an absolute star

My family know John and this is what he has been educating people for. They always speak highly of John whenever his name comes up.
Social media has the potential to be great but can be so harmful also.
Does anyone genuinely think John meant what he said. I find people’s reactions appalling if they are attacking the individual. He is a human being with a condition he would not wish on anyone. He deserves the right to dignity and compassion having lived what he has to live through every day of his adult life.
It is an unfortunate situation and he will wish it was never uttered, but are we to lock people with Tourette’s syndrome away like we locked people away in the past because they weren’t “normal”.
I hear genuine bile and heard it again on the radio at the weekend football games coming from people who mean what they say. Nothing is done to correct that narrative.

Jamie Foxx should hang his head. He could have made a joke of it and prevented all this regrettable pile on.
I guess he doesn’t do irony ?

I saw the film a few months ago and it’s highly recommended.

Whilst no expert on TS, I’m assuming John must have thought, whatever you do don’t say the N word and then bang, it comes out ?

I never paid much attention when I saw this story, it was a tad difficult to make out what had happened due to the BBC trying desperately not to offend itself in the telling of the tale.

I thought it was just a couple of brothas talking jive.

It actually turns out to be hilarious.
