I don`t think anyone is really getting mad at John for ticking, or at least they shouldn`t be - and those who are will hopefully learn something from the conversations about tourettes that it has sparked. I do think there`s another conversation to be had over the BBC`s decision to broadcast it though. It wasn`t live remember, it was broadcast with a two hour delay. I wonder what would have happened had John ticked with the c-word, or (heaven forfend) "Free Palestine!" for example? Would the BBC have edited out either of those? If he really thinks John meant it he could easily visit Galashiels and discuss it directly. Not so easy for John to reach out to Jamie Foxx. Post Edited (Mon 23 Feb 21:20) Reply |

| 24. Author: da_no_1 Date: Mon 23rd Feb 2026. 23:03 Surely the BBC SHOULD be broadcasting it, in full. The whole point of the film is to tell the guys story whilst raising awareness of his condition. An unfortunate but absolutely perfect example of it was the incident last night. What better way to raise awareness of the syndrome and how NOT to react to it. The BBC can **** off with its selective censorship, it actually gets me angry that we`re forced by law to pay for it. In a clip of the film I`ve seen the friends mum says to John he doesn`t need to apologise for his tics as it`s not his fault. I`d while heartedly agree with that approach. I can understand why someone would feel the need to apologise though. So if the BBC didn`t edit it because they felt there was nothing to apologise for then they had a point to some extent. However, surely common sense would suggest they should censor particular words? I`m genuinely surprised by the ignorance, mainly from over the pond, about the condition. Perhaps all those who are offended should spend some time watching the film to understand what John has been through. Reply |

I had assumed sufferers would just uncontrollably swear but its also often they will say the most offensive thing, the one thing they know they shouldn`t say but it comes out before they can stop it. At least that`s what I`ve heard since this incident from media commentators. I suppose there are certain situations and scenarios that those with Tourettes need to remove themselves from. As for this particular instance I think the BBC just made a mistake, not quite realising what had been said, but it`s no surprise to read the usual right wing agitators online using it as another bat to beat the BBC with. And although my eyes were open They just might as well be closed Reply |
| 29. Author: parsmad68 Date: Tue 24th Feb 2026. 11:24 The young female actress in the film who comes along as part of John’s learning experiences after her parents hear about John actually has TS and is part of a YouTube channel with her driving instruction. Her driving instructor is obviously Scottish and maybe Chinese ethnicity (I don’t know) but she has regular pops about his Chinese backgrounds, because it cannot be helped. He takes it with the grace and humour of an understanding human being. We should inundate Jamie Foxx with videos of this so he can mock outrage all over again. Reply |

| 31. Author: Bletchley_Par Date: Tue 24th Feb 2026. 23:25 I think this situation is quite simple. The sounds heard were not words they were ticks. Thus they were not "racial slurs". No bugger deserves an apology, except maybe John, but he was there to raise awareness of Tourette`s and he has certainly done that. It is no one`s job to educate rich, undereducated actors about disabilities, except John who was there to do just that. We should also remember we have followed John`s story for a while, he does not shock us like he did the first time he appeared on our screens. Luck in misfortune. ![]() Reply |

I’m sure all the adults can have thick enough skin to accept he’s not being purposely racist. Children use excuses to wail. COYP Reply |
