They are called streaming giants for a reason....being able to spread you content across potentially billions of users rather than tens of millions, and having adverts on the platform significantly changes the commercial model.

The BBC sells their content to the US and other countries too. The recent BBC drama "The Ridge" was co-produced with Sky and sold over in NZ as well as in the UK.

The main difference is the likes of Netflix just buy or produce TV. The BBC is paying for all these regional radio stations and news programmes, as well as the likes of the world service. There must be incredible waste in radio in particular.

My biggest bug bear with the BBC and STV is so much of it is based around Glasgow.

Would you prefer if all media outlets were controlled by rich, powerful individuals who want to control the news available to the public? Surely that`s a bigger threat to democracy than the BBC?

I just accept that they are and ignore accordingly, are you seriously trying to sell me the idea of the BBC is inpartial and honest?

I don`t wanna go down like disco.

I`m not trying to sell you anything but by your logic we`ll end up with media we just have to ignore which seems pointless.

Ye could always change the channel if ye dinnae like the news….

The issue is not that a news channel is biassed or an inability to change the channel, the issue is with this particular channel we are paying for it under the understanding that is presents the news in an unbiased manor.

Take yourself....typical dot net TDS sufferer, an acute case.

Now where have you got most of your information about Trump?

Out of his own mouth. Is that fake news too?

If it`s on the BBC, quite possibly, that is what this entire thread is about.

Take a seat Eck, now this may make your sphincter tighter than a Jewish Scotsman`s sporran.....but Donald Trump is the victim in all this.

Yes Dear Buffy, my overt support of Trump is directly opposed to your ubiquitous TDS.

On your cuteness, unlike the BBC I do not jump to ill informed conclusions so when I have the evidence I`ll let you know.

And there you go jake... on this thread we have (similar but not direct quotes) "nothing positive to say about scotland", "too much focus on Glasgow", "BBC is a waste of money". "Radio is too expensive".

One of the positives from my perspective is that you know what you`re paying for. What are you paying for through other models? (Paying for adverts through higher product prices) Paying for other subscriptions?!?

What I`m pretty sure is that whatever model is chosen folk will complain.

I`m also quite confident that if the BBC wasn`t here people would quite quickly complain about the fact it was no longer here.

I still think the main difference is the volumes that they can sell.

I`ve just had my email through thanking me for renewing my licence so right now I very much wish I didn`t need it. Could happily live without the BBC in our house but pay it on the off chance we might want to watch something on iPlayer and to stop the nonsense of having TV licensing at the door (always with a burley fella behind them to threaten you).

Bin the license fee and pay for the programming through adverts - the current system is out dated and a waste on tax payer money.

The BBC as a programme making entity is absolutely fine and some shows are really worth the watch.

The BBC News though is another kettle of fish, dealing in purely factual based programming/information. From a “state” broadcaster, impartiality should be a 100% staple of the channel. We have seen time and time again though how they have twisted narratives to suit the agenda of the people in charge (and by that I mean the sitting parliament).

Their coverage of the Indy Ref was just downright outrageous, along with their coverage of football shows until recently “allowing” BBC Scotland to cover our games - before it would be a 5 minute analysis then 10 minutes on England…..

Jake. Cancel it. You will get a refund for any payments due over the year from the date it was cancelled.

In this day and age with the technology we have it should not be too difficult I would think to block something you have not paid for…? Surely.

If my son was to “ Channel flick “ and scroll through those channels that are covered by the license fee and watch something even for a few minutes then technically we are breaking the law. Just block it. I can’t access Netflix or Amazon Prime if I have not paid for it.

I look forward to the day a TV license gimp comes to my door. No dialogue, just tell him to leave and slam the door in his face…

What an opportunity we missed in 2014.

Say what you want about the streamers the BBC is the only one whose subscription (license) model is one based on coercion. Not everyone falls into the ‘just cancel it’ brigade, most people just pay it to avoid the hassle of the small risk of someone coming to your door even if they never or very rarely watch BBC.

If there was not the threat or if the BBC blocked users on cancellation (making it morally easy to leave) license numbers would fall through the floor.

The BBC channels benefit from being the default 101, 102 channels on your telly.

I’m not sure anyone would watch ‘Bargain Hunt’ if it were on Netflix. And I doubt many people search for old episodes of ‘Homes Under the Hammer ‘ on YouTube.

But these shows get decent ratings because they’re on BBC One and finding the remote control takes effort.

Agreed

Was there not a thing with Sky, I’m going back a long time, when they were going to put their sky one channel on 101, and have bbc channels in the 110’s - and the government actually pressured them not to and leave bbc1 and bbc2 as the first two channels

I`m direct debit so I can cancel at a month`s notice. However, as others have said, it`s just to avoid hassle. If it was Netflix or Paramount or whoever, those channels would just disappear when my contract ends. Not with the BBC though. No doubt the licensing guy would appear just as my wife wanted to watch Strictly or the kids were watching...actually, I`ve no idea what they might watch on the BBC!

I find the demise of "normal" TV quite sad in a way. I remember sitting at my grans house watching utter guff like Generation Game. I didn`t really understand it but it was a family activity. Same with the films they`d put on at Christmas. It felt special watching them together. Now my kids can just watch pretty much any film they want whenever they want without even getting out of bed!
