I`m not seeing much `new` politics, with supporters of the new PM being elevated to the House of Lords and given a job in government without being elected. That`s one thing the SNP won`t be guilty of doing. Reply |

Not legally. it is a convention that any minister be available to answer questions in parliament. It used to be quite rare for someone to be ennobled in such a way to allow inclusion in the cabinet – I think there was a bit of comment when David Young was ennobled in the Thatcher years. Patrick Gordon Walker was made Foreign Secretary in 1964 by Harold Wilson, despite losing his seat at the General Election. It was assumed that he would soon get back into parliament, but he managed to lose the Leyton by-election so quit. Reply |

Author: McCaig`s Tower Date: Wed 22nd Jul 2026. 14:04 As for Anas Sarwar, it wasn`t that long ago that he looked like becoming First Minister Then the world decided that Starmer wasn`t very good at his job (he wasn`t, although better than several recent incumbents), and was somehow responsible for things like CoVid, Putin invading Ukraine, war in the middle east and the re-election of Trump. (He wasn`t this either). Sarwar has been getting a lot of flak for the insipidness of the Holyrood campaign, but how much of that is justified, and how much is residual bitterness over not being socialist enough is not clear to me. His demise reminds me a little of Aberdeen constantly sacking managers for not winning the league. Who will get his job as leader? Jackie Baillie will be interim leader but I don`t think wants it permanently. I don`t think Daniel Johnson wants it. Monica Lennon will replace him as MSP, she may want the top job as well. Michael Marra is a good MSP - but he may feel he can do more. Paul Sweeney may be a candidate, but choice is limited. Reply |

Author: wee eck Date: Wed 22nd Jul 2026. 14:07 When politicians are told the public are disillusioned with politics and politicians they always say they `get it` and Burnham said he would change that, but he`s no sooner in the door of no 10 than he`s sacking those in the Cabinet who were close to Starmer and replacing them with his cronies. Now he`s finding a job for someone who isn`t even an MP. Are they so carried away by being in power that they can`t see how this will be perceived or do they simply not give a toss how it looks? It was the same when Starmer came to power and we had all these examples of `freebies` being taken. Moaning about how high positions in Scotland "are always occupied by white people" and his grievance politics where everyone is supposedly Islamophobic. Also can`t help but find the irony in him being privately schooled, Leader of the Labour Party and now a Lord. Reply |

Him being made a lord after all he said about the Lord`s is surely the final nail in his political career coffin. Except it isn`t as he`s now going to be paid for life for doing sweet FA. | 20. Author: jake89 Date: Fri 24th Jul 2026. 10:13 We now have nearly 800 people in the Lord`s. Each eligible for £370 a day. Although they don`t all show up, that`s almost £300k a DAY or around £60m a year taking into account recess. Why on Earth does a country this size need 800 Lords? Reply |
