Sarwar has been made a Business minister. He was a dentist before taking up a political career. Reply |

I`m amazed someone hasn`t started one of those petitions to get 100k folk to back it and ensure it is discussed in the Commons. And jake I think your question is the wrong way round.... it isn`t why does this country need 800 Lords, the way the system works I think it should be "Why do 800 Lords need this country?" Reply |
| 23. Author: NMCmassive Date: Fri 24th Jul 2026. 15:17 Part of the problem with putting the right person in the right place I believe is all of the political negotiations in the background. I believe the parties negotiate with each other about who gets what position and what legislation will be challenged and what won’t be challenged etc. I also believe that’s how we’ve basically ended up with this uni-party structure. Labour won 36 seats from the SNP at the 2024 General Election, and were ahead in the polls. At that point I think it looked likely that Sarwar would be FM. Reply |

If he`s going to be a minister of state I think it`s reasonable that he gets paid the going rate. If he reverts to being a mere peer, then he will get no salary, only an attendance allowance (and frankly inadequate expenses). It is possible to quit the Lords and there is talk of introducing a compulsory retirement age. I don`t think its the sinecure people think it is, nor a job for life. Reply |
| 27. Author: McCaig`s Tower Date: Fri 24th Jul 2026. 21:34 It`s about time these positions were specifically for individuals with relevant University education or experience in the field. Cabinet reshuffles have become an absolute joke of inexperience If you were going to introduce this constraint (and constraints lead to sub-optimal outcomes) you`d have great difficulty filling any cabinet positions. (And that`s before you get into the debate on what counts as relevant or experience). In theory the policy should come from the elected politicians and the Civil Service should facilitate its implementation. Ideally you should have well-informed and well-advised politicians implementing good policies with competence. Not all of these criteria are met, and then problems are exacerbated by politicians dissembling. Reply |

| 29. Author: wee eck Date: Sat 25th Jul 2026. 11:35 I had a Laboiur canvasser at my door during the 2024 General Election campaign asking me to `lend my vote` to Labour to get rid of the Tories. Little was said about Labour policies. It was the same message at the 2026 Holyrood election but this time we were asked to `lend` our votes to get rid of the SNP. By that time folk were disillusioned by Labour at a UK level and the majority opted for the status quo. Reply |
| 30. Author: hurricane_jimmy Date: Sat 25th Jul 2026. 16:49 MT always has an excuse for the British Government`s or Unionist parties` negligence or malpractice well-prepared. There wasn`t a hope in hell that Sarwar was going to be First Minister - the Independence vote will always consolidate around the SNP, come election time. Put on top of that, the current hostility toward migrants - particularly those of an Islamic background - and also Sarwar whinging about white people occupying the majority of.managerial posts in Scotland, then I think we might be edging closer toward the true motives of the UK Labour party in "promoting" him. Long story short, it`s a way to get him out the way and keep him financially sound. Reply |
