I don’t really follow “Champions League” football, but what obvious manager is out there to take over from him? They’ve had some really baffling appointments since Sir Alex retired. Correct, BB. David Moyes was Fergie`s recommendation of course and he might have succeeded if he had kept Fergie`s backroom staff instead of clearing them out and bringing in his own team. Successive appointments were equally poor if not worse. United really missed the boat by failing to hire either Pep or Klopp and that`s not being wise after the event - I said so at the time. Van Gaal and Mourinho were not good fits at OT and I don`t know how the decision makers could possibly have thought differently. Ten Hag has struggled from day 1. He doesn`t appear to be great at building a good relationship with the players in his squad. Not your average Sunday League player. Reply

I watched the West Ham game and Man U could have been 5 up at half time .. then the 3 subs for West Ham were fantastic and really bothered Man U .. The penalty decision was an absolute joke .. Feel sorry for Ten Hag We are forever shaped by the Children we once were Reply

There seems to be this myth that Mourinho was terrible at United - in 2 seasons he won a League Cup, Europa League, finished 2nd to City (which may be given to them eventually) and had a 58% win ratio for them 😂 hardly awful. There was no chance United fans would take to the style of football he favoured. Compare that to Fergie`s brand or those brought up on Best, Law and Charlton or even Tommy Doherty`s young team.... Author: kelty_par Date: Mon 28th Oct 2024. 17:28 I think Ferguson tried to pitch the Man Utd job to Pep when he had his year out (before Bayern I think?) but he wanted total control and his own people in place before even thinking about it. City got the likes of Tixi Begerhastan (sp?) in as a sporting director etc in and gave him carte blanche. I think Pep would have taken the United job too but here we are. They make loads of money, even more than Arsenal and Liverpool but they just spend it on absolute dross. Not sure if Fletcher will help in that regard, the ex Southampton guy doesn`t seem to be doing much and they really need a proper director of football or a manager who`ll do it all so they don`t waste stupid money on average signings. I see Xavi is favoured at the bookies which would be an odd appointment as he`s been shown up by Flick at Barca and I`m not sure how good his English. Zidane had only ever been at Real Madrid and at times they seem to need man managers rather than head coaches. Southgate would be a dud for various reasons. I can`t see it as it`s not a sexy appointment but I reckon they should be looking at Thomas Frank at Brentford. Excellent coach, gets the best out of players and knows the league and the language. I’m pretty certain Man U fans would bite your hand off for a manager who could get them back to that sort of level. COYP Reply

I`d argue that a good knowledge of English is absolutely essential, wee eck. Very few managers have been successful when having to speak through an interpreter. Remember Unai Emery at Arsenal. How much better is he faring at Villa now that he has a reasonable grasp of the language? Not your average Sunday League player. Reply

I remember when Pochettino arrived at Southampton he used an interpreter for his post-match interviews but he was much more confident to conduct them in English by the time he moved to Spurs. Reply

Fergie left Man Utd with an ageing squad and nothing for the next manager to work with.
