You’re meant to play the way that gives your team the best chance of winning. Winning 1-0 is always better than loosing 3-2 COYP Reply |

Especially in international football where you need to fit around the best 20 or so players you have at your disposal. There`s not the dedicated coaching time to build and build and build a particular style. Unless of course there`s a wholesale consensus across governing bodies and a generational plan implemented. Which is a hilarious concept for Scotland. Reply |

If it doesn’t work out then the fingers should be pointed their way. Zwei Pints Bier und ein Päckchen Chips bitte ![]() Reply |

| 67. Author: Tad Allagash Date: Fri 9th Oct 2026. 15:41 What does ‘International Standard’ mean? McBurnie’s good enough to play in the English Premier League, but he’d be out of his depth against San Marino? Reply |

Change takes time to come to fruition, and whether it will or not work remains to be seen. But I don`t think the manager is the problem, and it`s far too early to be writing Pocognoli off. Under Clarke, we qualified for tournaments consistently, something Scotland hadn`t exactly made a habit of doing. The next step was always going to be getting our big players to turn up on the big occasions, and unfortunately, they haven`t done that consistently across the last three tournaments. Euro 2020? We drew with England at Wembley, lost narrowly to the Czech Republic thanks in part to Schick`s wonder goal, then lost to Croatia. Hardly a group where everything fell into place for us. We narrowly missed out on a World Cup play off final to qualify for Qatar. Euro 2024 was disappointing. We got hammered by Germany, drew with Switzerland and failed to deliver against Hungary when it mattered. But again, we`re talking about tournament football against decent opposition, not some procession where Scotland should be expected to stroll through. Although so so called pundits tried to make us believe we could stroll it. Then we qualify as group winners for the World Cup in the USA. That`s no mean feat in itself. We win our opening game, one of only five victories we`ve managed at a World Cup, and suddenly we`re in a decent position heading into two difficult matches. We should have had a stonewall penalty against Morocco, who are hardly mugs, before Brazil gave us a doing. Could we have performed better, Absolutely, But nobody should be pretending we`ve had a particularly kind run of draws at major tournaments. Haiti aside, we`ve hardly been handed an easy route. My point is that Scotland have spent years trying to become a nation that regularly qualifies for major tournaments. Clarke helped get us there. Now the expectation seems to be that whoever comes in next should immediately turn us into a side capable of competing with the best, regardless of the players at their disposal or the opposition we`re facing. Clarke had a really decent team, most of which are now reaching the end of their careers. I`m not saying Pocognoli is definitely the answer, and I`m certainly not saying he shouldn`t be criticised when it`s justified, Tuesday was crap. But judging him this early isn`t really fair. Steve Clarke also had a tough time when he started, we narrowly beat Cyprus 2-1 at home got beat 2-1 in Russia which was sandwiched by 2 scuddings off Belgium. This is Andy Tod`s world and we are lucky to live in it. Post Edited (Fri 09 Oct 19:25) Reply |
