It won’t be landing on the moon but orbiting it and will be breaking the distance travelled record. You can watch it live on BBC News from 11:24pm our time and also on NASA’s you tube channel. 🌙 🚀 ”Buffy’s Buns are the finest in Fife”, J. Spence 2019” Post Edited (Wed 01 Apr 23:10) Reply |

It’s been 50 years since NASA has sent a spacecraft into orbit so it needs to navigate this first before further test flights can be conducted. From NASA ~ This mission is to lay the ground for a lunar landing by astronauts in the Artemis IV mission, planned for 2028. Ahead of that, Nasa plans another crewed test mission, Artemis III, in 2027, to rehearse Orion`s rendezvous and docking with one or more lunar landers and to try out the new spacesuits if they are ready in time. Nasa has picked two rival commercial landers for Artemis: SpaceX`s Starship and a craft designed by Jeff Bezos`s company Blue Origin, and will decide closer to the time which vehicles fly which missions. When Artemis IV finally flies, the astronauts will be heading to the Moon`s south pole. After this, the aim is to have another landing later in 2028 with the Artemis V mission, to build up the capability for a sustained human presence on the Moon.” ”Buffy’s Buns are the finest in Fife”, J. | 11. Author: parsmad68 Date: Thu 2nd Apr 2026. 08:13 I was at the final Shuttle launch and it was incredible. The feel of the rumble of those solid rocket boosters that vaporised the clouds that day was amazing as the ground was shaking. I can only imagine was it was like yesterday. The feeling of touch and go that day due to the rains that disappeared just before the launch made it even more special. Reply |

| 13. Author: McCaig`s Tower Date: Thu 2nd Apr 2026. 12:39 I think NASA used to be terribly cautious, particularly with the Apollo program, presumably after the Apollo 1 tragedy. So Apollo 7 was "merely" a manned earth orbit. Apollo 8 went round the moon with Tom Hanks as command module pilot - they were there at Christmas which seemed a big deal. Less than a month later the Pars would play West Brom, for context. I think Apollo 9 was just another earth orbit to test the manoeuvrability of the Lunar Module, Apollo 10 got close to the moon`s surface, before the eventual moon landing with Apollo 11. Then it got a bit boring, although Tom Hanks (him again) perked things up with his "Houston, we have a problem" moment. I love that film. This all takes me back - to the days when the Cape was Cape Kennedy, and Mission Control was at Houston which I imagined was nearby (why, I don`t know). My neighbour came back from Shetland with an American accent because he`d spent so long watching the TV coverage. I was also confused by a Top Cat cartoon when he talked about "Cape Canaveral" - it seemed so old fashioned. (Also confusing was the cartoon being called "Boss Cat".) All these 60s memories get quite jumbled. Reply |
