They have, but I agree its a massive waste of money.

So was the great wall of China.

Yeah, but you can see the moon from it.

You can`t see it from the moon, not with the naked eye.

But if you could, that would kinda be my point.

Space exploration may be worthwhile but who knows unless you try?

I don`t understand the obsession with Mars though. Looked rubbish on Total Recall.

Just wait until you realise it’s Space X that’s landing them on the moon. I get the feeling some may let their politics get in the way. 😂

Orion is the NASA rocket. They’ll then leave Orion and board starship. Starship will take them to the moon, land, act as their “base” then take off and bring them back to Orion.

It’ll be an absolutely amazing mission to complete if successful.

The fact that when NASA was struggling that someone like Elon musk can come along and still push R&D then also help provide a platform for something like this is incredible.
Actually insane we have reusable rockets that can land like they do.

I’m all for it.

Nazis putting people on the moon again?

History might not repeat itself, but it often rhymes.

🤣

You do realise that the communists used nazi scientists to run their space program as well?

One extra crazy regime recruiting Nazis helps your point how?

We should sort this out now though: I am not now, nor have I ever been, a Marxist. I like open and fair democracy, and lots of it. I like democracy in government, in the workplace, in the family, in education, in every facet of human existance where it can possibly be squeezed. I obviously would despise Marxists* with that worldview, right?

This is also at the root of my issue with Trump. That and the paedophilia.

*Marx did say that history would repeat itself "first as tragedy, second as farce" though, so he wasn`t always wrong.

Great.

Why call everyone you don’t like a fascist?

I only call the fascist ones fascists.

The ones who behave like fascists, use fascist tactics, quote fascist talking points, and use fascist symbolism. I don`t see the problem there.

Aye okay.

So considering you behave like a communist, use communist tactics, quote communists and their talking points. Folk shouldn’t have a problem calling you a communist?

It’s interesting that Wotsit quotes Orwell in his signature.

Orwell also said the following:

‘ The word Fascism has now no meaning except in so far as it signifies ‘something not desirable’

They are different programmes. Different programmes with different objectives means different technical designs that need tested. I wouldn`t really like them not to test stuff and assume it would just work.

This one is to get to Mars. They spent days testing stuff when in earth`s orbit. They will go to the moon i think on IV. I think their ability to leave kit in space to test docking is currently more their priority given future plans.

The moon is only 4 days away. Landing on the moon isn`t hugely important when the trip to Mars and back is expected to take (I think) 3 years.

It hasn’t regressed. The manufacturing and distribution areas used in the 1960s and primarily the Apollo era are now obsolete. Richard Nixon cancelled the space program citing it too expensive. The people who designed and built the original space crafts etc are now gone. NASA still has the plans etc but it would cost too much to replicate the originals and now it’s about safety, research and rebuild rather than speed and high finance.

No chance of getting to mars. How would they carry the fuel to get back? If anything went wrong once there,no chance of a rescue.

I can see that to be fair, it`s just something that has always been odd to me, however in saying that, not a subject i pondered much, only when something like this comes up.

My favourite is in the Voyager missions, I believe programmed in Fortran and as the majority of the mission team are dead now, how they manage to keep solutions running for the software and commands of a system 50 years old is incredible. Can you ever imagine finding a programmer who works in building antique code and the tools to support that software. I bet they are very rich 😜.
I did Fortran at University in the early 80s and it was already classed as a dead language that we did for kicks.

There will come a day in the future where fuel stations will be built on the moon. Probably the same on Mars.

Well, regarding fuel in space, you only need to carry enough to build momentum and to slow down again...

Can`t fathom why some folk think technology has regressed...the computer that guided the Apollo missions to the moon is less powerful than a pocket calculator...
