27. Author: AdamAntsParsStripe Date: Thu 20th Jun 2024. 20:47 Dave_1885, Thu 20 Jun 16:38 The system is very efficient in Germany. Nothing goes to waste. Even football games where fans are travelling to games with bottles and cans. As you alluded to, down and outs would be at the train stations with huge bags or trolleys to collect their goods to exchange at the supermarkets for a decent return. 28. Author: jake89 Date: Thu 20th Jun 2024. 22:17 They`ve had it in Canada for years. The bins even have little cup holders so you can put bottles/cans on the outside for homeless people to take without raking in the bins. I`d wish society offered support so this wouldn`t be required but at least it gives them a small amount of dignity. Ridiculous that we`ve got all these DRS sites sitting unused because Westminster are so useless. Reply |

Very friendly as well, would actually ask if you were finished with a can etc and take it from you if so, and if you said no they would nod and move on. A lot of us were just leaving things beside the bins to make their life easier. The way their streets are cleaned in early mornings is incredible as well - Dusseldorf looked like a war zone the first night the English were there (not trouble wise), came into the city the next morning and was completely cleared. 32. Author: buffy Date: Tue 28th Jan 2025. 16:25 It was the uk government who put the stop to it. First they agreed, then sgov tells businesses it’s got the go ahead, then the uk government changes the terms to exclude glass. Surely businesses should sue the uk government? ”Buffy’s Buns are the finest in Fife”, J. Spence 2019” Reply |
33. Author: The One Who Knocks Date: Tue 28th Jan 2025. 16:34 The scheme was a shambles. It only worked if, and I kid you not, enough people didn`t return their containers. And although my eyes were open They just might as well be closed Reply |
34. Author: Buspasspar Date: Tue 28th Jan 2025. 17:48 We had this scheme back in the 50`s you got money back for every bottle returned to the shop I think it was a penny a bottle .. so us guys would scour the town to find as many empty discarded ginger/juice/lemonade bottles we could find .. thruppence got you a lot of sweeties back then We are forever shaped by the Children we once were Reply |
35. Author: wee eck Date: Tue 28th Jan 2025. 18:34 I don`t understand why the Westminster scheme doesn`t include glass. What`s the logic behind that? Reply |
36. Author: jake89 Date: Tue 28th Jan 2025. 19:36 I would sooner have DRS for glass than plastic. If also want to increase tax on use of plastic bottles to encourage more sustainable packaging. Reply |
37. Author: Wotsit Date: Wed 29th Jan 2025. 00:10 Yip, makes sense to exclude glass from the scheme if you want to discourage the use of plastic since it is basically a tax because even though it is easy to claim it back it is often not the person who pays who claims it back. So not only are you discouraging folk from consuming products that harm everyone, but you are also encouraging them to collect up the harmful stuff to make it much easier to properly deal with it. To me it makes no sense to undermine such a good result for everyone, but apparently the people who choose to be in politics are a special breed of sociopath. 39. Author: Wotsit Date: Wed 29th Jan 2025. 16:34 I have no idea TOWK, I was just making a general point about why glass might be excluded from such schemes. The enemy travels by private jet, not by dinghy. Reply |
40. Author: The One Who Knocks Date: Wed 29th Jan 2025. 16:41 I had always thought it was something to do with the logistics of the glass containers being recycled but your reasoning makes absolute sense. And although my eyes were open They just might as well be closed Reply |
