Topic: Looking tough to qualify

Some big goal differences out there for teams on 6 and 7 points in 2nd place. Let’s throw the kitchen sink at it Saturday.

Just said that on match thread, we really need a 3/4 goal win tonight I think to have a chance. Going to have to batter Stirling now, only 3 teams from 8 go through so going to be tough and need a lot of results in our favour.

Some of those teams have a more difficult final game than us
I think we shoul put enough past Stirling to get through

I cant find time to do a full analysis

This is the order of 2nd placed teams as it stands, according to Flashscore:

https://www.flashscore.co.uk/football/scotland/league-cup/standings/#/4lxmmct4/table/overall

I tried to copy the table and paste but the format gets all knocked to pot.

1 Ross Coonty 7 pts GD 9
2 Buddies 7 pts GD 7
3 Cove 7 pts GD 4
4 ICT 6 pts GD 5
5 Diamonds 6pts GD 4
6 East Fife 6 pts GD 3
7= The Ton 6 pts GD 2
7= Pars 6 pts GD 2

Airdrie have only played 2, all others played 3

Some relevant fixtures: Montrose v Airdrie today (Wed). Airdrie v Alloa on Saturday.
Airdrie must drop at least 3 points.

Ross County v Partick. RC must drop at least a point.
St Mirren v Ayr. Saints must drop at least a point.
Queen`s Park v Cove. Cove must drop at least a point.

Hope I`ve got it right. Somebody else can check and give more detail?

IMHO not qualifying might not be the worst thing to happen. A run in the Scottish cup might be good but the next couple of seasons for us will be about the league.

I’m not too fussed if we qualify or not as long as we win Saturday.

It was always going to be tough. I said beforehand if we won 3 of the 4 I’d be happy and we look on course to do that. Going to Tynecastle was always going to be rough.

Cup runs are nice and all but promotion to the top level is the main aim.

I initially thought it looked really unlikely just looking at the tables, but had a closer look along with fixtures later.

If we were to win by three, that would put us on nine points and plus five, (9/+5).

Group A
Falkirk (8/+9) v Spartans
Queens Park v Cove (7/+4)
Assume Falkirk win the group, we`d need Queen`s Park to take something.

Group B
Ross Co (7/+9) v Partick (9/+7)
Need Partick to win/extra point draw or a comfortable home win.

Group C
Assume Airdrie beat Montrose tonight
Airdrie (9/+>4) v Alloa (9/+3)
Either team to win.

Group D
St Mirren (7/+7) v Ayr (9/+12)
Likely beyond us, unless Ayr win/winning draw.

Group F
Rovers v Inverness (6/+5)
St Johnstone (9/+5) v Elgin
Rovers to take something.

Group G
Motherwell have won the group
Morton (6/+2) v Clyde (6/+1)
Winners to not win by more than us.

Group H
Kilmarnock (7/+3) v East Fife (6/+3)
Livingston (6/+2) v Kelty
Assuming Killie beat East Fife to win the group we need Livingston to not win by more than us.

Groups A, B and D are the biggest challenge. We do our thing and if just one of them goes our way we`re in with a shout. All things considered, I`m not that hopeful. I`ll be happy with a win and a good performance.

Well done Parsfan.

I had overlooked the fact that some of the teams now in first place are not certain to stay there.

A big win v Stirling Albion, good performance and no injuries would satisfy me.

All they can do is go out and try to put a few goals past Stirling, can`t do anything about the other groups and how they`ve played out. Been pleasantly surprised in the games so far, fought well against hearts, completely dominated Dumbarton and were solid enough last night even with the lack of bodies up front.

Really not a fan of this format and would prefer it’s just a straight knockout.

You have teams in groups playing each other differently e.g. we got the game at Tynecastle where another team would’ve had them at home.

With no real disrespect intended but there isn’t a depth of quality across the Scottish leagues so with the right team in your group, a walloping is on the cards and you’re up against it from the get go.

Three games in eight days isn`t ideal either.

A potentially interesting scenario arises in Group C should Airdrie win tonight. As Parsfan points out Airdrie and Alloa are then both on 9 points. They could therefore play out a shameful 0 - 0 at the weekend, ensuring both teams qualify from the group.

Extremely unlikely we can qualify, gonna miss out on goal difference I`d say.

depends if Airdrie want to be seeded in the next round or not.

As mentioned there are a variety of results which aren’t too unlikely which would give us a chance of qualifying.

What I do find completely unfair is that the Ayr v St Mirren match is played on Sunday whereas all of the other final group games are 3pm on Saturday.

With Ayr on 9 points from 3 games and a goal difference of 12 they look odds on to qualify. St Mirren are on 7 points with a GD of 7, so know that a win or ‘winning’ draw is needed. They will however have the benefit of knowing exactly what is needed before kick off, which is a completely unfair situation.

I think it`s more about winning every game and getting into the goal scoring and winning mentality.

If it is down to goal difference we can expect all out attack.
Lennon will tell them to shoot on sight.
Caution to the wind.
Losing would be no worse than not scoring enough.

Agree with this. I`m not a fan of the format either. Maybe just because it seems to disadvantage us because we`re not a premier league team but would like to qualify. 😂

It`s not often though you see a group stage competition where a team will go out having won 3 out of 4 games (here), or 2 out of 3 (world cup/euros - 6 points), or 4 out of 6 games (champions league - 12 points). It does happen but seems far less frequent than this competition?

It would be better if the top two went through or there was a playoff of some kind.

Drawing Hearts was a bit of a triple whammy-

1 Probably the best team in the qualifying stages
2 Playing them away from home
3 Playing them in the first match

Giving away 2 stupid penalties at Tynecastle scuppered qualification.

Must admit, I like it and for me, it’s been the best change in Scottish Football for a good number of years.

It also gives variety, in a league structure that has none. I’d rather see the top 2 go through but I’m in favour of the league stages 👍🏻
