Topic: Looking tough to qualify

It would be fine if top 2 from the group went through. It is bizarre you can win 3/4 and still go out. Admittedly though it does encourage teams to score a lot of goals to try and be one of the best second placed teams. I’m sure we will go all out to score as many as possible on Saturday.

It might be tough but looking at previous years, the 3rd best placed runner up had the following:

2024 - 9 points +5 gd
2023 - 9 points +3 gd
2022 - 8 points +4 gd

Must admit, I like it and for me, it’s been the best change in Scottish Football for a good number of years.

It also gives variety, in a league structure that has none. I’d rather see the top 2 go through but I’m in favour of the league stages 👍🏻

It also provides lower league teams with much needed revenue after several weeks with Hee Haw. Especially with 1 well supported team in the group.

Agreed. Far better than pre season friendlies at this time of year.

I may have dreamed this, but did we not have a similar set up some years ago, only for it to be abandoned perhaps because many of the games were completely one-sided?

During the 60s, every team took part in the League Cup from the start. There were 8 groups of 4 teams and 1 of the bottom 5 in Div 2 the previous season (Section 9). Sections 1 - 4 were composed of Div 1 teams, sections 5 - 8 Div 2 + newly promoted teams. Section 9 then played off (and lost) to the winner of another Div 2 Section before the quarter finals in which sections 1 - 4 were seeded. Teams played home and away in every round, including the group phase.

For me there’s reasons I do and don’t like it but it certainly does help spread money throughout the leagues which is great.

This what it is and there’s pot luck on who goes through but we’ve done fairly well in recent years.
Saturday is pot luck as well.
We can score 5 or 6 and still go out but that’s the way it goes.
Losing 4-1 to Hearts has cost us big time.
2-1 was a fair reflection on the play.

That’s a fair point. Too much is kept at the top.
Look at the richest league in the world down there, whole bunch of clubs going out of business/struggling to hold on meanwhile Bournemouth and their 11,500 all seater stadium are competing with AC Milan for signings…

I like it. Only change I would make is that the first seed must play away to the second seed. Try open up the groups a bit more.

The top 3 best 2nd place teams may go back to 4 next season depending on the coefficient.

Lets pump the binos 6-0 and worry about the outcome after that.
I`m going with my bino son in law ... in the norrie for a pre match trial beer - could be fun.

For the folks that call this a puppet cup, no qualifying last year cost us , 300k, we cannot afford to lose money like that .
As a club that hasn`t won a cup of any kind in 57 years, we certainly cant be picky .

Airdrie and Alloa are both on 9 points in their group and play each other tomorrow. We certainly don`t want a draw in that game

Folk need to stop with the "diddy cup" patter, it`s a massive opportunity for clubs at our level, both financially and on the park. Spartans pulling in £166k from just one run last season at our expense. That kind of money can make a difference to a club like ours in terms of updating facilities, the wage budget, recouping other cost ie the pitch.

Spartans made the following from last season’s run:

Group winners – £36,000

Round of 16 (win) – not separately listed but gets them to QF

Quarter-final (losing) – £100,000

Quarter-final TV fee – £30,000

So just from prize money and TV fees alone, Spartans pocketed £166,000. That’s absolutely mental at this level.

We made a total mess of it last year when the group was more than manageable. It wasn’t just a missed chance on the park, it was a massive financial own goal too. That’s the difference between standing still and kicking on.

And let’s be honest – we’ve not lifted anything outside of League 1 since 1968. Can we really afford to be turning our noses up at silverware of any kind? Get through the groups, get a glamour tie, maybe even get on the telly. You saw the buzz around the Aberdeen game.

It’s time we started taking it seriously.

That post was okay for AI, but looks like Chat GPT got that bit wrong. We`ve won the Championship/ Second Tier in 1989, 1996 and 2011

Once you can get some new patter we can have a discussion.

So how have we not won anything outside of League 1 since 1968? Ask Claude?

Anyone figured out how many goals we would need to score today related to goal difference

"Spartans made the following from last season’s run:

the prize money is done by when you go out of the competition, the 36k was for sides who finished 2nd in the group and went out. they got 100k as a losing quarter final side, still a decent sum.
