Author: Buster_Brown Date: Sun 28th Jun 2026. 10:00 As I said on the No Scotland No Party Podcast,our World Cup problems are all on Steve Clarke for me, but I’m genuinely shocked he walked away, and although I’m nervous about who’s next, I do think it’s the right decision. Clarke was the right man at the right time, but I also think it’s the right time to hand over the reigns as the dynamic of the squad is changing and he’ll always have his tournament failures hanging over his head. He gave me some of the most enjoyable nights following the national team and I’ll always be greatful to him for the job he did and getting Hampden full again. It’s shouldn’t be overlooked the absolute mess he took over from. However, attending games have been a snoozefest recently and it was moments that got us to the World Cup, not performances. I was dreading the Nations League campaign and the subsequent Euro Qualifiers under him. Moving forward, I don’t know who will get it. Prior to his move to Rangers, I would have said McInness and would have been delighted with that, but it ain’t going to happen. I hear people saying Ange, I would love that but doubt it’s realistic…..so who?? I think the only realistic option within Scottish football at the moment is McGlynn, or we go down the foreign route as even the Scots who are managing south of the border are out of our reach at the moment, for one reason or another. I’d rather not go foreign, it never sits easy with me that you have to be Scottish or have Scottish heritage to play for the country, but anyone can manage us…it just doesn’t sit right and I’d just rather not. In time, qualifying for the World Cup could become another unforgettable memory. Sometimes, though, you have to accept where you are. Do I think we`re good enough to qualify? I`m not so sure. I hope I`m wrong, but when you look at the list of potential successors, I can`t help but worry about the upcoming qualifying campaign. This is Andy Tod`s world and we are lucky to live in it. Don’t think Ange (putting aside if he was at all interested) would work, his ethos is leading from the front and aggressive attacking football, we just don’t have the calibre of players to do that so can’t see the benefit in him. I always thought Moyes would be a shoo in once he is done with Everton - too early though, I don`t think anyone is leaving the English Prem to manage Scotland. I kind of wanted Clarke to stay on, but I recognise our record in the finals have been grim. The truth is, that`s the story of Scotland - I`ve just finished Archie McPherson`s book on Scotland in the WC, and my own thoughts are, it`s all excuses , at all the tournaments it`s our own fault- either not as good as we think we are, or basic errors in preparation We have a real problem too with the lack of quality younger players coming through.
